    Default APA SINGLES REGIONALS

i am qualified for the regional tounament. i am in a bracket of 44 players with 3 to qualify for las vegas. it is a modified single elimination format. i went to the apa website but cant make any sense of it. do any of you know how that format works. being that there is 3 winners i would think that the 44 get split into 3 seperate brackets. i am just wondering how many matched i will have to win in order to go to vegas. it says on the paperwork i recieved that i am guaranteed to play at least twice. i guess if i lose the first match i still go on, but if i lose after that im out?

It's double elimination... so you would have to win 7 matches to win the tournament (assuming that you don't get a "bye" in the first round and if you don't go to the losers bracket ) If you do lose your first match you will then have to win 11 consecutive matches to win the tournament... your last two matches would be against the winner of the winners bracket as you would have to beat him twice to eliminate him.

So all in all depending on how many you win in the beginning will substantially increase your chances to getting to the finals. The number of matches needed to win will vary with how soon you do or don't lose.

It could be anywhere between 6 ( if you get a "bye" ) and 11 if you lose in the first round... Good luck!

    Oh also..
    1st is the tournament winner
    2nd is the finals loser
3rd is the losers bracket finals loser
( all one win apart )

thanks tsuguy. so all the players stay in the same bracket and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers go to vegas. sure sounds like a lot of matches for me to have to stay on my game, im gonna have to really pace myself with the alcohol. i was really hoping for a 4 or 5 match deal. the tounament is saturday and sunday and they are also doing 9 ball. from what i remember i think they have about 10-12 tables. im hoping all of 8 ball is done saturday and 9 ball sunday. ill keep you posted on the results. its in nj and from what i hear the guys from hoboken are great shots. i have been practicing my a** off all week for them.

Yep, everyone starts out a "winner" lol  then once a player loses a match they are then seperated into another bracket with others than are on the brink if elimination... but from there it's more and more work to get to the top 3! Stay on your game, practice your concentration this week, and sip the beer when you're there... Hopefully I'll see you in Vegas ( I qualified two weeks ago ! )

APA Tournaments are generally modified double elimination which means you are guaranteed the opportunity to play twice but not necessarily to lose twice.

What essentially happens is that the losers from the first two rounds move to a consolation bracket but the consolation bracket does not resolve to a traditional winner of the losers bracket. Instead, there are winners who are then rolled into the winners bracket later in the tournament.

Go to: http://www.amateurpool.net/aparules.htm and the bracket charts are at the bottom portion of the page.
The race may not got the swift nor the battle to the strong, but the smart money bets that way.

One more thing to keep in mind. APA has a 3 tiered handicaping system. eg In 8 ball you have the 1st tier which is SL 2-3, tier 2 SL 4-5, and tier 3 SL 6-7. 9 ball is tier 1 SL 1-3, tier 2 SL 4-6, and tier 3 SL 7-9. The regional event I participated is there was only one player to advance from each tier. In other words, out of over 100 people participating in 8 ball and 9 ball, only 6 contestants advanced to Vegas.
Boy, he is great! Jeez, that old fat man. Look
at the way he moves. Like a dancer.
And them fingers, them chubby fingers. And that stroke. It's like he's, uh, like he's playing a
    violin or something.

True, I assumed with only 44 players they were all the same tier, but that isn't necessarily the case!

I went to Las Vegas a couple of years ago to play in the nationals. It was alot of fun. There is alot of sandbagging 6,7 and 8 skill levels. I did okay,,but lost near the end by a sl7,,who ran 4 racks. But a good time is all that matters.
