Enhancing the grain on Ash snooker cues .

can anyone tell me how to make the grain lines really dark on Ash snooker cues , wood stain is not the go as everyone seems to want the grain as dark as possible but the rest of the wood not stained . (in case you haven't guessed I restore and refinish snooker cues for people semi-frequently)

Perhaps rubbing it with dilute nitric acid or tung oil would give the desired results. Both substances tend to give the wood a yellower color.
