View Full Version : Frozen Object balls?

Hi Guys,
Does anyone have an opinion on this (seems like almost everyone does).

When the Cue ball is frozen to your object ball is it legal to hit straight on? Most people I ask say no because it hits the tip twice, it doesn't seem physics would allow this to happen since the cue ball will not have a chance to come off of the tip.

I can believe it's illegal but not for the double hit reason. (also most agree that aiming to the side is ok)

It's not legal because it's a push. Your natural follow through will push the cue ball and object ball at the same time.

In VNEA rules, if the ball is frozen against the cue ball, the cue ball must be struck at at least a 45 degree angle.

in most 9 ball world pro rules you can stroke right through it at less than 45 degrees

let me rephrase, in 9 ball rules, if the balls are frozen u can use a level stroke and hit right through it, if they are not frozen (slightly apart) u must use a 45 degree angle or any other way to avoid a push

It would probably just be a push if they were frozen, this is illegal though I've never seen it called in the APA league I play in. If the balls are slightly apart the cue ball will bounce back from the object ball resulting in a double-hit.

There is a real interesting tape if you're into physics available from Bob Jewett for cost. It is call "The Jacksonville Project" basically it is a lot of experimental shots taken and recorded with time-lapse photography.
