Looking for advice on a good tip for a break cue. I am thinking of going to a basic Lucasi cue. Their standard tip is a triangle. Is this a good tip for a break stick? If not what are your recommendations?

I was a little frustrated with the Triangle tip I bought....didn't seem to hit quite hard enough..then again, it could have just been that one tip.....or the cheap stick I used for breaking... .

This was a pretty good discussion earlier:

I'm sure you will get some feedback on this....good luck......mike

I have used phenolic tips before but have only one problem with them. I do most of my own cue repairs and some of my friends as well. The problem with the phenolic tips is they are extremely hard to keep attached to the ferrule. I have tried many different adhesives with a wide range of "working" time. Generally after about 10 breaks, the tip would roll off. While the tip was on, the performance was outstanding. I just got tired of replacing the tip every week.

Dags, you have that problem with yours?...I do my own also, but it is not the most entertaining venture to be changing out a tip in the middle of a night of pool. I use the Super Glue Gel, and have had no problem with regular tips, but if this is the case, I would rather stay away from them. Maybe someone else will comment also.............m

Maughanm: My experience with phonelic tips.

I had a problem with the tip on my bungee jump cue staying on. I kept gluing the tip back on until one day it flew off and I couldn't find it. I then tried a sumo tip but it did not even come close to performing as well as the phonelic tip. Frustrated, I gave up and bought an imitation bungee jump on e-bay for $25.00 (a replacement tip from Instroke costs $20.00). When I decided to try a phonelic tip on a break cue I got the tips on e-bay (about $12.00 for three) and took the cue to the local cuesmith. In the mean time I found my original bungee tip and had him take the sumo tip off that I had installed and put the bungee tip back on. The tip on my imitation bungee cue is original and has not come off. The professionally glued original bungee tip has been on about a year, as has the phonelic tip I had put on for breaking. All those tips get a lot of use as I am pretty, ok somewhat, diligent in practicing my jump and break shots.

The local cuesmith uses Duro Super Glue Gel (as do I), so the flying cue tips difficulties that I was experiencing with my bungee cue must have been due to my lack of skills. I usually do my own tip replacement even though I do not have a lathe. The phonelic tips are so hard that if the diameter of the tip and cue tip don't match the work involved with trimming the tip to size sans lathe is just to daunting of a task.

Don't be afraid to give the phonelic tips a try. The expense of buying a tip and having it installed is not that much. Granted I haven't been using the phonelic tips for long but IMO the benefit is definitely worth the expense!

One word of caution, phonelic tips are so hard that they do not hold chalk worth a damn. If you like to put a lot of spin on the cue ball when breaking the phonelic tip may not be for you. For 8 ball I use a second ball break with "some" draw and outside english and don't have a problem with miscues.

Hope this helps.

By the way I am still waiting for someone to put a phonelic tip on a Predator BK. I am kind of curious as to how well, or poorly, it works.

If nobody gives this a try in near future perhaps the good folks here at Seybert's would be willing to loan me a Predator BK. I would be more than willing to pop for a phonelic tip and installation, put the cue through its paces and then report back to the folks who browse this forum. Of course, to properly test this combo, Seybert's would need to replace the old beat up bar box in my basement with a nice 9 ft table. Just so they don't think that I am to demanding I will use my own light.
