View Full Version : Installing a New Tip ???

OK, I have just installed a new hard triangle tip on my break cue. So far everything has gone pretty good. I used my lathe to remove the old tip and to get a perfectly flat end on the ferrul. I then roughed it up with 60 grit sandpaper ...I also roughed up the back of the tip. Then applied a very thin coat of Crazy Glue Gel, then held the tip in place for 30-60 sec. Put the shaft back in the lathe and evened out the edges of the tip/ferrul. I then polished with 400, 1000 and finally 2000 grit sandpaper. I then used my burnisher to really burnish the sides. Great so far. ( I think) But when I started to shape the tip I cannot get a good finish ...it keeps ending up 'fuzzy' ....what have I done wrong ....or what am I not doing right.
thanks,

Sounds like you have done everything perfect. Put some chalk on the "fuzzies" and start breaking. Should work great.

I agree with Sid...a tip doesn't have to have the tip perfectly smooth to work great...I like just a bit of fuzzies...holds chalk better.

Thanks for the replies. It just seemed to be a little too fuzzy. I am looking for a hard tip for breaking ...with the fuzzies it feels a little soft. I guess I was trying to get the same finish as new cues. This is the first tip I've ever replaced ...I guess I didn't know what to expect. I will say that it looks professional ....just a little fuzzy.
thanks again,

the fuzzies will disappear once you start slammin' balls.
Triangle tips seem to get a lot of fuzzies. They go away.
8O Super techy really wanted to do his own re-tipping but unless you have a lathe and cheap cues (or know how), do not do them. Especially if you have a Pred's 314 (you are at risk of melting the ferrule.)
Having said that, this site has good info on how to do multi-layer tips on a lathe. (They suggested taking a copy to your local re-tipping pro.)
