Joint selection

I was wondering what is the difference in Joints. What is the difference between a soft hit and a hard hitting joint? Which do you prefer? How do i know what is best for me?

I prefer a hard hit, as I can really feel what's going on with the entire shot that way.

I have a stainless steel collared joint on one of my cues and a metal to implex joint on another.
