View Full Version : Your favorite wood for cues
There's no way I could list every wood available, so I'll just mention the common ones. If you like a different one, let us know via a reply to this.
I have three cues, a bacote plain jane, an figured ebony sneaky pete, and a goncalo alves cue. They all hit sweetly, with the bacote feeling slightly better to me than the others. As beautiful as they all are, I enjoy looking at the goncalo alves the most. They're all keepers in every regard.

Birds-eye maple..I feel like it gives the best hit. Local cue maker says it is also the easiest type of wood to create a well balanced cue.
coco for the grain...funny thing is I have never owned on...yet.

Yes, a good specimen of cocobolo can be stunning. It's a toxic wood, and some cuemakers don't like to work with it for that reason.
When I'm ready to throw down the cash for that one special cue, it'll be a Lambros with cocobolo points and butt sleeve 8)

Well since I fell in love with the Pechauer IV-2 I'll let you guess what wood I like the best. I really love cocobolo wood, in fact I'm waiting on a custom knife with cocobolo handle scales. What can I say the other woods are nice, but it doesn't appeal to me like cocobolo does.

Saw a cue yesterday at a tournament that used Pink Ivory. Beautiful beautiful wood that I had heard of but had not seen before. It was birds-eye maple with 3 pink ivory and 3 ebony points. :o 8O

When I had my custom sneaky pete made, the cuemaker offered to throw in a pink ivory ring above the butt cap at no extra charge. I declined because I was too rigid in my idea of how I wanted the cue to look. I kick myself for that now. That ring would've added a lot of personality to my SP.

A nicely figured birds-eye maple has always been my favorite, no stain or anything like that. Some cue makers have been able to bring out the true beauty with that wood. I love it...

I prefer a forearm of rosewood as opposed to birdseye maple since the former causes the weight and balance to be shifted forward toward the shaft.

Anyone ever seen a nicely figured forearm made from Tiger Maple? Nice....

I've seen a few tiger maple maple cues, but I couldn't tell the difference between tiger and curly maple. Are they two names for the same wood?

Tiger maple has these really beautiful "stripes" instead of the birdseye that you see in the birdseye maple. Tiger maple is really pretty, but I've only seen a few cues using it. I'm sure that there are cue makers out there that use quite a bit of it, but I haven't seen it used too often, it's a shame, tiger maple is a real beauty of a wood.
I'd vote for Coco-bolo. Especially matched with maple. I happen o have one from AE and get lots of comments from others as well.
if you like cocobola check out the joss web site, theres a whole coco cue, ivory joints & butt cap. 1 of a kind grain pattern.
but i like black palm and red palm completly unique every cut :D

How about paduak(Vermillion)? I feel this is a very beautiful wood and i am torn between that and Ziracote as my favorites.

ever seen the back of a violin? violin grade curly maple, is curly maple whose grain lines are good enough to be used for a violin's back :D get it? sorry if my explanation seems to be going around in circles :)
Sure, the birdseye looks great on Violins ...but they don't hit worth a crap and are hard to chalk. :?

I prefer playing with a violin bow. And if I get angry, I'll use it like a baseball bat!
