I haven't played with any Lucasi's yet, but the ones I have seen and handled haven't impressed me. My Wife plays with an older Jeanett Lee model McDermott, the M8 I believe. It is a very nice cue that plays fairly well. It hits a little soft for me, but it is a well made cue.

I think they're probably both about the same quality for the money. I've owned a McDermott, but not a Lucasi. My McDermott was fine (I have a custom cue now), but a little butt heavy. I would think it is important for you to hit with both cues and see which one feels best to you. The quality will be the same, feel is probably more important.

Hmm, tough for me to pass up replying to this post...especially when there is an opinion that an import cue and McDermott, or an import cue and just about any domestic cue, are about the same.
Will say this, McDermott cues are made by craftsmen and craftswomen. Many have been here well over 10 years...including our Production Manager, Larry, who has been here about 27 years now.
I believe our finish and our wood to be 2nd to none in the world. Not to mention the top service department in the industry if your cue were ever to be damaged or in need of refurbishing. And that is just scrapping the service as to why a McDermott.
Many cues will PLAY well, even the imports. But keep in mind your purchase is an investment. Can your investment be serviced by a professional? Does the company have a good reputation? What's the warranty?
Thanks,

I have two McDermott's and a Lucasi and they all play very well, however I am partial to the McDermott (It was my first cue).
IMHO customer service at McDermott came up short when I tried unsusessfully for appx. two months to buy a weight bolt. (Steve ...did you really mail out 3 of them?) I also wanted to buy a Super Mac case but was never given infomation on availability until they were sold out.

Yup, sure did! The last time I tried, I even showed it to our receptionist to be a witness! :D
Something is up with the post office between us...or your address was wrong, or your postmen has a thing for weight bolts cause I never had the bolts come back to me.
Did you ever visit one of our dealers for a bolt, or are you still playing with a weight you don't want?

I tell you; I owned a lucasi model2017 for over four years. Loved the inlay and design but in all those years I could never get accostomed to the feel or the inconsitent reaction I allways got with it, no matter what tip I had on it. I finally purchased a Mcdermott m7-06 just for a test ride and let me tell you it was an imediate improvement on my game. That was about 1 year ago and my game is still improving. These cue will basicly let you know if you didn't do something right and almost how to fix it. I now own another 2 Mcdermotts- Sexton and Jump/break and I won't ever give them up. Mcdermott has gorgeous design and inlay like lucasi but for feel and playability with consistency a Mcdermott cue is always the better choice--period.

You cant go wrong with a mcdermott or a viking.

mcdermott over lucasi all day long. the lucasi cue i played with had a real cheap feel a made the annoying "clink" sound every shot. I currently own two mcdermotts, I swear by them, and I will never buy another brand

Put the Lucasi in the fireplace to keep warm while you play with your McDermott.....

I let someone talk me into a lucassi. Nice cue and shot descent. Always felt like a "2 piece" cue. I even tried different tips and made sure the weight bolt and bumper were tight. I went back to McDermott. McDermott just feels like a "1-piece" cue w/ a very solid, consistent hit.

Maybe I just got the good Lucasi of the bunch. Mine shoots just fine. I have shot with other peoples cues ranging from Meucci's, Vikings, and a friend of mines's custom. While they all had their own characteristics, in the 3 months since I have had my Lucasi I have jumped from a 2 to a 5 in 9-ball, and my 8-ball rank has finally started to rise as well. Albeit most of that has to do with my practice time and the fact that I have taken another step on my learning curve, the Lucasi has allowed me to take advantage of certain aspects of the game that I just couldn't seem to figure out with my old cue-tec.
PS-- I am not implying that Lucasi cues are superior to any other cues. Just that mine is working for me. I also believe that once you have attained a certain skill level, to a certain degree, it doesn't really matter what cue you play with. Unless it's a Cue-Tec. Then you have to be Alison Fisher with a custom shaft. :P

It all depends on what you like, and most of all your style of play. There are some websites that explain the feel of all different types of cues. According to cuestix.com they say that Lucasi has a solid hit, and McDermott has a firm solid hit. So by that website they don't play much different. I have shot with both and I prefer McDermott over Lucasi, but that is because I feel McDermott is more forgiving. You can put a lot of english on the ball without driving it offline as much as the Lucasi. Also you have to take into account the price of Lucasi vs. McDermott. The cheaper McDermotts have wood to wood joint, where most Lucasi's have metal to metal. So that will make them play a little different too. I prefer the McDermott wood to wood. Find a place that will allow you to shoot with both and see what you like. If you put a lot of english vs. being a straight shooter, I think you will like the McDermott better. But try them both and see for yourself.
