View Full Version : Break cues
Hi,
Can anyone advise if break cues are really worth getting and if so are break/jump cues a better combination? I am a fairly good standard, but needs something that is really going to split the balls, whilst keeping the cb under control  .
Have seen the Predator BK, but want to know if other cues advertised are just as good.
Really not sure whether to go for seperate break and jump cues or go for the combo.
Help...........

There is some great advice on this site regarding this topic. I agree totally that you need a separate jump and break stick. I have a Picone that I really like. I just got my son a Lucasi jump and it is wonderful. I may be borrowing it from him from now on.
Good luck.

As I experienced having break cue is worth!!! I used to have only play cue and broke with it then my tip flow off and messed my comp,   especially bad coz it was final! Another point is when you break off tip shape will change quick so you need to shape it occasionally. These are my point of having break cue.
I personally can not use jump/break cue. People at my club have jump/break cue (made by C.T) but they are not as good as jump cue. However some player can use very well so I can not say anything about this. You have to try and see yourself.

I've been thinking about getting a Piccone jump cue. Which do you prefer, the thicker Piccone butt or thinner Lucasi butt?
why should you pay extra for a break cue? i just use the broom stick the house will provide. Is there any difference??

If you break just hard enough to spreads the balls and get position, a house cue with a decent tip should be fine.
If you use a powerful break, you want a cue made of better materials and to tighter specs so that as much energy as possible is transfered to the cue ball. I used to think that a house cue did the job, then I broke with my Jacoby one day and saw the light.
I hear the phenolic/leather tips being used on jump cues make good break cue tips. I'd like to try one.

I am using a Players Cue with a Phenolic Tip installed for breaking and it breaks very well and with a nice satisfying crack. For jumping I have a Lucasi Jump cue and my play cue is a Predator Sneaky Pete with a Wrap and Instroke layered tip. I love the way all my cues play but I must admit I have considered buying a Lucasi Jump/Break Cue and installing a Phenolic Tip on it.

I have the Predator BK for breaking and I have a Balabushka jump cue. The BK is an awesome cue and I am just starting to learn with the jump cue. Three of my buddies have Bungee jump cues and they are quite an amazing cue. I would definitely recommend buying a seperate cue for breaking and jumping.
first you should get a break cue since the break is maybe the most important shot, with a good break it's easier to run the rack.
now about those jump/break cues, they don't work as good as separate cues and here is the reason why:
with a break cue you want a cue that has no deflection so if accedently you put some spin on the cue ball while breaking, the cue ball will not deflect and will hit the rack at where you aimed.
and with a jump cue, you want a cue that will give a lot of deflection in order to make the jump shot easier.
since one shaft can't at one time have no deflection and on another time have a lot of it you'll get a shaft which is somewhere in the middle.
I have the predator bk and it works great and I do recomand it, when it comes to jump cues the important part of it is the tip, the harder the tip, the easier the jump, just get the cheaper cue you can find and get a good, hard tip. you can get the bunjee tip here at seybert's
good luck 8O

You will notice the difference when you drive a splinter thru your finger or when the shaft shatters and impales your arm.
Watch the pros and you will see that their most important shot is the break. If they don't make a ball chances are they will lose that game. There is more to the break than smashing the rack and since it is your first shot why would you want waste it. Use a cue that is made for it.
A good piece of advice I got was to never randomly throw balls on the table to shoot in for practice, unless you are setting up a particular shot. You should aways rack at least 3 balls and break into them to spread around the table. This will help your break and if nothing else make you a good 3 ball player.

There is one jump/break cue that is excellent both for breaking and jumping = oliver stops. It breaks very good and jumps better than the bungee (my opinion). The Oliver Stops cue doesent have the traditional ferrule and leather tip, donīt ask me what the material is, maybe someone here at Seyberts have more info about it.
Someone said that it is very similar to the sledgehammer?
