Ivory ferrules (as well as joints) give a firmer hit than most materials commonly used for ferrules. One drawback is that ivory is more prone to cracking when compared to other materials.

Different cue makes use a variety of materials for ferrules and each have their own characteristics. The majority of cue makers use one of the harder materials for their ferrules.

Any discussion on ferrule material is irrelevant if you don't take into account the tip that is put on the ferrule, shaft diameter and taper. All things being equal, a hard ferrule with a had tip will feel similar to a softer tip on an ivory ferrule. For maximum English you may want to go with a soft tip and ivory ferrule. Beware though it takes a player with considerable skills to control this combination. Most players, pros included, prefer the harder tip and ferrule. They are willing to sacrifice some english for the more consistent control of the english they do get.
