View Full Version : Which Tip if You are a "Picker"?

Sometime in the near future, due to financial circumstances, I'm considering selling my soul to the devil in exchange for an extra 314 shaft. I have a habit of scruffing the tip more often than most people. I would like to try a Moori, but don't want to be buying one at their price everytime I wear one out. Will a Moori hold up to this habit, or do I need to go to a different tip that I can be rougher on....Am using a Talisman now, but haven't had it long enough to see if it can handle it. 8)

The last I knew, Talisman was warning against using a tip pick on their tips. I believe they indicated that it would "fluff up" the layers of the tip.

I use Talisman Pro medium tips on both custom cue, a Joss built Brunswick and a Predator 3k4. I love them and use a Willards scuffer to keep it in shape.

Talisman tips do not typically require a great deal of maintenance to keep them performing excellently.

Sounds to me like you're scuffing the tip way too much. I pik and scuff my Le Pro's just a couple three times immediately after installation and within the first 2 hours of play. And that's all. The tip then lasts me 3 to 4 months playing around 10 hours per week..

I use a Moori medium tip and I have "picked" it on a regular basis. I have had the tip for aprox. 4 or 5 months and it has worn very well. I have no doubt that it will last for another 6 months at least. I did stop "picking" the tip after what I read on the Talisman website. I really don't want to delaminate the tip seeing as though it costs me close to $100 every time I get Predator to re-tip my cue. Anyway, I play about 15 - 20 hours a week, and I scuff up the tip a few times a week. I have noticed no problem with either scuffing or picking the tip. Moori is a great choice and really, no matter what people say, you won't know until you buy one and try it out.

Tanar,

Why do you get Predator to re-tip your cues? Is their warranty void if you don't allow them to re-tip it? Thanks.

New Kid,

I got Predator to re-tip my cue because I was just learning how to and I don't trust anyone else in this city to do a good enough job. The last time I got one of the guys at the local billiards store to do my Cuetec, he used a Dremel power sander to make the tip flush with the ferrule. As you can imagine, my ferrule was badly scratched and gouged. There is no way i will ever let that happen to my Predator (even my g/f calls it my baby).

The warranty is not void if you get someone else to re-tip your cue. I just thought no one else could do a better job than the people who built the cue.

By the way, are you planning on buying the LE-10? If so, let me know as I am thinking about selling my 3K6 and buying the LE-10. I would love to know how it plays compared to the 3K6. I would love to have both cues, but cannot afford it.... :(

OK, cool. I didn't think the warranty would be voided if someone else re-tipped a 314.

I love my 3K6. The 3K series is my main playing cue and I have never minded the front weightedness most people feel they get from the thickness of the stainless steel joint. In fact, I've never really noticed it.

As far as getting an LE-X, I was thinking about it initially, but instead of investing another $1,000 plus into that, I'm probably going to ask Dale Perry to make me a personalized cue and invest it into that if I can ever come up with a design that I really like. I would probably just get a P2 before I get the LE-X, but I still wish the P2 came in a basic black like the 3K1.
