When I started playing pool back in the 70's, if you didn't have a Meucci, you didn't have a stick. I used a Meucci all these years until I got the Predator a few weeks ago. Has the quality of Meucci gone down, or just better cues now by Predator and the others. I still run into a lot of old timers that wouldn't have anything other than a Meucci. I will have to say, I'll probably not use the old Meucci unless something happens to the 3K2. Just wanted someones thoughts on this. 8)

I heard many pool players claim their preference for the older Meucci's.
Moochi is nothing more than glorified firewood. Always has been, always will be. The Predator shaft is the only good thing about a Predator cue. The butt's made by Falcon which is garbage also.

I use a Predator Sneaky Pete and neither feel no see anything poor in its quality and construction. You want a pretty butt, then you'll pay for it. It's that simple. Myself, I'm into performance and not cosmetics.

I was thinking about getting a pred sneaky, do you use the wood to wood or one of the stainless steel joints?

The stick has a wood to wood joint.
I have 3 meucci cues, one of them was made in the late 60's and is a fine cue, the two other cues that i have are both late 90's cues and there is no discernable difference.
The one that i use is one of the later cues, i use a red dot shaft on it also.
Back to the original question and i think that there has only been an increase in the quality of Meucci's rivals, in my opinion the quality of meuccis has never been anything short of excellent. There have been significant techie advances by prtedator and such, and only now are meucci starting to respond to that by introducing the bullseye shaft.
Another very significant factor has been the trend in cues. People seem to prefer the stiffness of a predator compared to the whippyness of a meucci.
Its a question of taste and playing style, some suit (what i find to be a more sensitive stick) meucci's others dont. If you've grown up playing on lame Viking planks then its gonna be quite a departure to play with a meucci.
As to the comment about the firewood...

Yea.. I loaned the old Meucci to a friend of mine...and he is having a great time whipping me on Friday nights......says the stick has changed his game......I just like the stiffer shaft on the Predator...... 8)

I agree with the anonymous poster. I love my Meucci. I usually like it better with the 314, and haven't really played with the red-dot since I got that. I have taken out my McDermott, when I wanted a heavier stick (my Meucci is 18 and my McDermott is 19). I like it all. The differences are subtle. I'm having fun learning about the differences.
I still think the tip makes a more of a difference than the rest of the cue.

One of my teammates just got a new Meucci (ok, he got it for Christmas so maybe he didn't *just* get it) and it seems to be pretty nice. I didn't care much for his personally because of the weight and balance. It was an 18 oz and I normally shoot with a 19.5 or 20, so it felt like I was shooting with a toothpick. English, draw and follow shots worked well though.
From what I've seen around my hall the good players play with either a Predator shaft or a Meucci, but far more with a Predator than anything else.

i tried a friends meucci and found it so completly different to a predator.
it was easier to spin the cue ball and masse' , but i found it less predictable on long pots or when using "english".

I have purchased about 35 cues in the last 7 months to begin collecting...various Lucasi, Meucci, Viking, Predator, etc. Mainly production cues...will probably get into Dale Perry, Richard Black, and Black Boar when I begin to look at custom models.
Predator is what I play with everyday (3K6), but another poster talked about his Predator Sneaky Pete wood to wood. I puchased and played with one of these while my 3K6 was being looked at back at Predator. The wood to wood joint with the uni-loc feels great. Total control and confidence in the joint.
Concerning Meucci however, I own a PP-4, 97-21b, SE XII, MTC-4, the Piano Cue (mint) and I have to say, Meucci quality in workmanship is just not even there when compared to some of the Lucasi cues. I love his art, but some of the sloppiness in the Meucci cues really pisses me off...peeling lacquer over inlays in the MTC-4, can feel the points in the PP-4 as you roll your hand around the butt, small points of aluminum protrude and poke your hand some on the butt of the PP-4. Just not there. I have made a conscious decision not to purchase more Meucci until I see otherwise.
Purchased a Gambler 2 'spades' for my Dad for his retirement...new, 2 shafts...the butt portion of the cue actually is a bit loose and you can feel it turn slightly with respect to the wrap section. Just plain bad!
