View Full Version : Need advice on a new cue

I currently use a 19oz, Stealth cue, with felt tip. I am currently looking to buy a Viking K10. I really like the design. I am not sure which weight to go with I have been noted as being more of a pop shooter. I currently prefer more of the heavier bar cues when shooting from time to time. I am also intereseted to know what tip would be best. Some say felt and soft tips give too much english, some say the tip really doesn't matter. Want a lil more advice on cue tips. Basically looking for some advice on how I should best customize my cue for me. Any thing I really should look at at consider. Like height, weight or anything. Thank you

I like Vikings that are around 19oz, but I do have a 20 as well. I noticed that my game is better with a lighter cue. As for a tip, I have had great luck with Everest, and Instroke tips, no felt pad. Both have shot well and required little up keep.

Thank you, I am currently looking I think at 19.5oz, as for tip I have heard Elkmaster is good. But willing to try anything.

About 90% of the cues I sell are 19oz & 13mm. That doesn't mean it's the best weight and tip size, just the most common. What'll be best for you is what you most feel comfortable with. We make cues from 15 to 25 ounces (18-21 free, by 1/4 oz increments), and from 10 to 15 mm (12-13 free, by 1/4 mm increments). I used to play with a heavier cue, until a friend told me that if I hit the ball too hard most of the time (and I was at the time), to switch to a lighter cue. I did, and now have a lot softer touch to my play. As for the tip, we use French LePro tips as standard equipment on all Viking cues, but can switch to another tip for a minimal charge. Other options include Elk Master (soft), Crown (med.), Champion (med-hard), buffalo (hard), and Triangle (hardest). Generally speaking, the softer the tip, the easier it is to get english, sometimes maybe too easily. Soft tips have a tendency to mushroom out faster.

Sorry I haven't responded sooner. Been pretty busy here for the last couple months. To answer one question; UPS Ground takes from 1 day to 4 days to get most anywhere in the U.S. just depends how far you are from the shipper. Question#2; a 12mm wide tip is obviously one mm smaller in diameter than a 13mm tip. If you were to ask 15 people what difference it makes, you'd probably get 15 different answers, but it is generally assumed that the smaller the diameter, the easier it is to get english. Many also say the tougher it is to control the cueball. Some claim a great deal of difference between the two diameters. Others wouldn't be able to tell you which was which if they were blindfolded.

If you are a hard shooter then a lighter cue will be better for you. Personally I found that the 12mm tip was a bit small and felt rather weak to me. When I bought my Viking it had a 13mm tip on it and I liked it rather well. Then I bought a Predator shaft for it which has a 12.75mm tip and that's even better still. Currently I shoot with a 20 oz but I'm thinking about dropping it to 19.5oz to help with my touch.
