KJ, can you tell me what is the difference if any between Micarta and Ivorine? I know that they are a substitute for real Ivory but, Are they the same material and are they man-made or found in nature? Thanks.

Hello CueJunky,
These are definitely man-made materials. Ivorine is a linen based mtrl. that is created by wraping the linen on a mandrel while applying the white resin, much like linen melamine. Ivorine is a product that is manufactured by Atlas Fibre Co. Micarta is a flat laminate paper based mtrl., ivory colored and manufactured by Dupont. It can be made as thick as needed then cut into strips and turned round. Ivorine is the stronger of the two.

Correction : Micarta is made by International Paper Co.
Sorry for the mis-info. I shot finish on shafts twice yesterday and wasn't thinking clearly.

Thanks for the info KJ. On a similar vein, what is meant by "bone ivory"? Whalebone? Elephant bone? (I hope not).

The real old Westinghouse micarta is no longer made. It had asbestos in it and the manufacturing of it has been banned.
THe micarta sheet that is available nowadaws from Atlas and Prather are nowhere close to the original.
