Don't know about the kamui tips, but regarding the moori:
Slow = Soft
Medium = Medium
Quick = Hard

It's not easy to say how hard is hard or how soft is soft because not only the degree of hardness changes from brand to brand in the same category, but there sometimes differences within the same brand.

You also have to understand that every tip will get harder with time because it compresses form the pressure of the shots.

Humid conditions will also cause the tip to become harder, so if you live in a very humid area and you don't want to replace your soft tip every two months then you might want to consider hard tips, if you have a good stroke then getting used to a hard tip and generating lots of spin is a matter of one or two good long sessions.

Aloha,
I'm pretty sure that there is a hardness tester that is, or could be, used to test the hardness, or density, of tips although I've not seen one specifically for that purpose. I have owned a 'Rockwell' tester which is used in the metal/machining & heat-treat industries for testing the hardness of various metals so as to better suit a particular application. Lead for example is 'dead' soft while on the other end of the spectrum, carbide is harder than glass. Actually carbide is used to drill glass. Anyway, there is a wide range of levels btwn them so it is helpful to know how they compare/differ in hardness. From this you can create a 'scale' by which you can grade, relative to hardness. There are at least 3 maybe 4 scales that I know of just for the purpose of testing metal. There are a completely different set of scales used to test mtrls. such as rubber. Rubber 'O' rings for example are graded for hardness on a scale known as the Durometer rating. This possibly could be used to compare tips. But the key word here is 'compare'. You'd be comparing different tips relative to one another. Find the absolute softest & hardest tips in the world and these would be your low & high parameters. Everything else would fall somewhere in btwn. Whether your scale is 0 to 10 or 0 to 100 (more accurate), you'd be able to assign numbers to each tip relative to all the others (& the high & low). I've seen different comparisons of tips done but the number assigned is relative only to the particular scale being used by the tester. (The Decider). I'm not aware of a dedicated scale for the purpose of testing tips.
I've probably given you way more information than what you needed for your question but it should help you to understand that just giving you a number isn't of any value unless you know what scale it came from & how all the other tips rated on that scale.

i know muellers has come up with their own rating system, called the mueller hardness index (MHI). i haven't found any description of their methodology though. you can find a listing here

http://www.wolfbite.com/tip-selection.htm

i've also seen tiger quote durometer ratings for some of their tips before.

If you are looking for a very good tip for not a lot of money, try the Talisman Pro. The medium will work well for you.

i looked at the hardness rating for the tip you recommended and its only 73.9. i think it wld be a little too soft for me. i like the feel of the le pro but i want a layered tip that is similar to the hardness ot the lepro. i'll give the medium hard a try and hopefully i'll like it. thanks

Talisman Pro Hard might be a better bet for your preferences. 8)

I would suggest you try a medium Talisman before going to a hard. I find it to be somewhat harder than a Moori III medium. It is a firm tip that offers good performance. The hard is quite hard. I have found, with experience, that the Mueller ratings are not always accurate to perception. They are good guidelines but are not exact.

Thanks for the insight as always, jkregan. I defer to your suggestion. :)

I am the one that did all of the testing for the Mueller tip ratings. I tested hundreds of each type of tip and the rating system is designed to compare different tips to each other, as a point of reference, not to test specific tips of the same type. We have a custom made tester, similar to a durometer, to test the tips. If you have any other questions, please contact me at cuerepair@poolndarts.com Ryan
