I was just doing some testing with a couple programs to figure out my break speed. Found it was approximately 23.5 mph with a 19 oz Mezz Break Cue I. This was hitting it right side rail. Not bragging or anything but I just wanted to know if anyone else has tested their own break speed and what their results were. =) I'm not that big of a person 5'10" 130lbs, so I actually felt good with the break. if you want the video of me breaking, i think its just cool. lol im obsessed. anyway, any thoughts would be awesome.

that is a nice speed, how did you determine it? speed is definitely one aspect, but accuracy is more important. i wouldn't trade accuracy for speed, but if you can hit that kind of speed under control, then that would be a very nice break

I actually used a sound program to extract the auido and then checked how much time elapsed between each hit from cue contact to rack contact. Sat there bored out of my mind. I used a program called Adobe Audition but if anything something that can measure the milliseconds and such. Or just get a radar gun =). And then distance over time. it was about 4.5 feet from where i broke.

look where the CB ended up... I rather have a 19 mph break and keep the CB in the center of the table.

At the Minnesota State Championships they had a radar gun set up to measure break speed. While I don't remember the decimal point it was a low twenty five which was good for second in the seniors’ bracket. The top speed was over twenty seven when I left with one day left in the tournament.
While that may indicate that I have a powerful break, I don't. While I have no idea how fast my break is, I don't give it all I got unless I am breaking from the head spot, which I usually limit to games that are just for sh#t and giggles.
And like Skor, I would rather have a 19mph break and leave the cue ball near the center of the table, unless I fail to make a ball. In that case I would rather leave the cue ball on the head or end rail. Now if I could just figure out which breaks those are I could adjust my position accordingly. :?

I don't know if I have mentioned it already somewhere - if I did then I'm sorry -, but a professional player around here has 2 shafts for his break cue (a bk2 but I'm not sure that he still owns that cue), one with a leather and another with a phenolic tip. He uses the leather tipped for 9-ball while the other one for the 8-ball breaks as he claims that you don't need as much speed at 9-ball then at the 8-ball breaks...
I personally can hardly believe that I'll ever enough spare money (and a good enough break either) to allow myself 2 shafts for breaking... btw, now I'm saving money for a Predator/Longoni case, but that's a different story :)
When you'll be a pro player then you'll get all the spare shafts that you'll need...

I hope that will happen some time...

This video illustrates exactly what I mentioned in another thread. Notice how the cueball jumps to the side??? He didn't hit the rack square ( but due to the good break speed still got a good spread ) it resulted in a bad kiss from the 4 ball sending the CB down and almost scratching.
My advice... slow your break speed down until you can hit the head ball square with just a little top english ( very little as all you are trying to do is to stop the cue ball in the middle of the table when it comes straight back at you )
With practice you can have a 27 mph break and the cue ball will only travel about 6 inches after contact with the one ball 8)
