I'm thinking about starting some tournaments in my area and I am curious as to what everyone thinks makes up a good tournament.

Here are my questions:

1) What size tables would you prefer to play on?
2) What is a favorable entry fee?
3) Single Elimination or Double?
4) 8-ball or 9-ball?
5) Race to what?
6) Saturday afternoon or Sunday night?

My inital thoughts are 8ft tables, $7 entry fee ($5 to the pot and $2 to the house), Double eliminiation, 8-ball, race to 3, Sunday night.

All comments are welcome.

8) I agree or go along the same line as you. I wouldn't want to shoot on a 9 footer, its hard enough on an 8. Anything to make it fun and not serious. Wish we had more around here in Alabama. Budweiser has a few tournaments on weeknights that are fun....but they are on Bar-Room Tables.

I think it is a good idea to have the tournaments on the 8 foot tables because there is no tournaments around that has them on the 8 footers. The entry fee is good, not too much and not to little. i am only 15 and that is one thing I always look at before i get intnoa tournament is the entry fee. It tells you all about the tournament before you go. Good luck with your tounament. Your Ideas sound good!

1. 9 ft tables
2. $20 to $50 entry fee will be great (bigger prizes)
3. double Elimination
4. 9 ball
5. race to 7, race to 9 in the semi and 11 in the final
6. any time, any day, any where :)

I would shoot any tournament any time on an 8-foot table, that is a great idea. As for the entry fee, if you want to keep it on the low end go an even $10, with 7 to the pot and 3 for the venue, gives eveyone a little more money. Race to 3 is a good format, although I have had fun playing race to two.

$10 entry fee, double elimination, 8-ball, race to 3 on the winner's side and race to 2 on the loser's.

I agree with Skor on the entry fee. Keep the entry fee high enough so you will have a good enough payout to attract the better players. Make the races as long as you can for the time & tables you have available. Table size is not important. If the prize fund is there they will come. As for format I am particularly fond of a two stage double elimination.

An example for a 32 player field would be four brackets of 8 double elimination with the top 2 finishers of each bracket going into another 8 player double elimination bracket with the winners of the first set of brackets against the second place finishers and the finals bracket set up set up so the possibility of a player playing against someone from their qualifying bracket will not happen in the early rounds of the finals. This format, barring a freak draw putting the top players in the same bracket, spreads the talent in such a way that that the best players are not eliminating each other early. This is also good for the not so strong player because even with a loss in the qualifying bracket if he can get second out of eight players he is in a brand new double elimination tournament.

I don't care for round robin formats because you have shooters with nothing to win or loose just playing out the string deciding who wins or advances to the next round.

Deb, you would get along just fine with my wife. See gets along with everyone except me of course.

By the way, her name is Deb also.

Just kidding about the part about my wife not getting along with me.

Okay...just found the post!! Am I too late for the tournaments?? I think 9 footers, 9-ball, 10-20 entry, race 5 and race to 3, dble elimination, race to 8 in finals...by the way where would these tournaments be. If you are wanting people to travel for them, you need to have the payout big enough to accomodate...
