Hi everyone, I want to know what the taper is on the standard mcdermott shafts? Also, if anyone knows which taper of the new Initimidator shafts is most similar to the standard shaft? I tried the I-2 and didn't like it as much as the standard, so I was wondering about the one w/6-8" taper and how that one compares to the standard shaft? thanx Chris G.

Well the shaft that is most similar to the standard McDermott shafts is the I-1 shaft. It has a 13mm tip like most the McDermott shafts, and has the same taper.
The I-2 that you bought has a very similar taper, the difference is mostly on the tip size it is 12.75. So it may seem a little small in your hands.
The I-3 has the european taper and is an 11.75.
So if your looking for one that plays like the standard McDermott go with the I-1, but remember this. Out of all the I shafts the I-3 has the least amount of deflection, then the I-2, and I-1.
I personally own all 3 shafts and this is what I can tell you about the I-1. It doesn't ever get pulled out of my bag. I shot with it for about 2 weeks trying it out, and I don't think it offers much more deflection than a standard McDermott.
If you are dead set on having a shaft that is the same taper and tip size as the McDermott, and gives you less deflection than McDermott I don't know what to tell you.
Most of the shafts that give less deflection also go down in tip size, and the tapers change.
So if your happy with the feeling of a standard McDermott, why change?
There is a chart on Platinum billiards that shows the top shafts and cue deflection. The McDermott didn't have that much more deflection than the I-1 by McDermott. At least not $236 worth in my opinion.
You do what you want, but the I-1 is the shaft your looking for.
