The 3/8 x 10 314 shaft does not have insert right so threads cut directly into the wood of the shaft unlike say 5/16 x18 or 14 where there is a brass insert ?

Your 100% correct. The 10 thread has the threads cut into the wood of the shaft. No insert in the 10 thread.
