Here is my latest addition to the Skollection

It's a Schon STL-3 with Gray stained points and butt, it makes the cue look like a fancy sneaky pete....

it will be used as a back up cue for the McDaniel on crowded nights and as a traveling cue....

enjoy the pics 8)
(although it doesn't really do te cue much justice...)

so.......
I went to my local pool hall last night....

At first I set up the Schon with it's original shaft, I haven't played with a Schon in years so I didn't quite remember how it feels...
Any way, I axpected it be very stiff but it felt quite soft and I like the feel but not the hard tip.
The shaft is OK but I guess that after 8 years of playing with a 314 shaft, no shaft will feel right...

Next I put my 314 shaft on it with a new Moori soft tip.
First I have say - Moori soft is the way to go :!:
Again the cue gave me a great feedback with very little vibrations.
It felt really good!
I was sure that the soft feeling came from the soft tip so I switch the butt to the McDaniel, using the same shaft with the same tip and then I noticed for the first time just how stiff is the McDaniel!!! it almost felt as if I was playing with a hard tip!!!
Not that it is a bad thing but the Mac does vibrate a bit more...
I can still play just as good with both cues and I was switching butts every two racks (played 9ball by myself) and I didn't need to get used to a cue, both cues are very similar in weigh (the schon butt is 10 grams heavier) and the balance point is almost the same.
It really surprised me that the schon has a softer hit because the metal joint sleeve on it is longer the on the Mac and schon are known for being really stiff cues...
Infact I think that for a while I'll stick with the schon as my main playing cue... especially in the next few summer months since the leather can be a bit sticky....

I don't know how they do it, but again there is no doubt that schon is one of the best playing cue money can buy :!:

Well, I had a second session with the Schon.
This time I was shooting 9ball with a friend, I only played with the Schon and the 314 shaft, without switching butts or shafts.
The cue feels perfect :!:
I played some great 9ball, broke and run out more often then I usualy do...

Got to love that Moori soft tip, the best tip I ever played with, great performance and great feedback. only problem is that it looses it's shape quite fast and needs to be rounded very often.

How bad does it mushroom? That is the one thing that I don't like about my moori medium. Fortunately I don't mind taking the little extra time to care for my tip. The playability makes up for it. IMO

It didn't mushroom (yet) it just becomes a bit flat
I don't mind taking the time to groom the tip but what it means is that it'll have to be replaced more often then a medium tip...

Can you make it through a night of playing without having to groom it? I've been considering going softer, and I don't mind tip maintenance either, but I'd rather not have to fool with in the middle of a match.

I don't need it to be a perfect dime sape at all times...
I start with a dime shape and by the time that I'm done it's a nickle shape.. so I don't groome it while I play
I usualy don't shape my tips very often and most of the time they get to a nickle shape and stay like that for a while, so I realy don't have a problem with the tip, the feel it gives and the control of the CB are worth it.

I might just have to give it a shot. I'm due for a tip change right now anyway. As much as I liked the medium over the hard, I've been thinking of going to a soft to see if I like that even more. If I don't I can always go back. 8)
