Ok I have only really gotten into playing pool in the past couple months. And last night my buddies and me went down to the bar to do a little drinking and play some 8-ball.
Well it was my turn to play this guy (we'll call him bubba). He broke didn't get anything in, so I shot and made a couple in, he didn't have a shot and made nothing in, went like this for a whle. Then it came down to him having a four balls left and me having the 13 and 8 left on the table. The 13 was up by the corner poket and the CB was tight against the 13 (picture below was kind of how it was set up). I was trying to figure out what to do and my buddy came up to me and said, "I would try and cut it into the corner pocket on the other end" so I shot and missed.
But, after that bubba flipped my buddy off and started bitchin at him for giving me a liitle help and my buddy explained why he helped, bubba didn't care and wanted to get into a fight with all of us.
Anyone think there was anything wrong with this?

Was money on the line? That one factor would explain a lot about people's irrational behavior at the table.
In your case, I would assume it was just a "friendly" game. If it was, then there was nothing wrong with your buddy giving you advice. Sounds like you just ran into the typical idiot that thinks he's better than everyone at pool.
Next time, just ignore the guy. If he insists on making a ruckus, just tell him that the only way that you'll play independently without outside advice is if a money roll was sitting on the lamp.
I don't see anything wrong with it, it's not as if it was a tournament or league.
The world is full with idiots.... don't worry about it 8)

I love playing 8 ball in bars. It funds my pool habit. My policy is that bar folk are oblivious to the rules of the game so if anything is in question I'd give it to them. I know I'll catch em that game or the next. Drunken wits are not worth the effort or time. Chances are if you would of said o.k. did know that one, have the next shot, you would of caught em and beat that game.

You can't get around playing strangers in tournaments and league but in a bar situation I rarely play a strangers. I prefer to spend the time nursing my beer and shooting the breeze with my freinds. If I want a freindly game I'll play with freinds or people whose company I know will not rub me the wrong way.

Ditto that here...

Well put dags. If I'm in my local pool room I will shoot just about anybody. If I am in a bar that just has a couple of box tables, I am very judicious about who I will or will not play against.

I would have told him that maybe he should ask your friend for advice too with all the crap he had left on the table! LOL
My mouth always gets me into trouble though. LOL

Oh yeah, why in the hell were you playing someone called bubba anyway? That alone should've tipped you off. :P

Maybe you should've talked to Bubba about shrimp. That might've been the problem there, not enough shrimp-talk! :D

I hardly play bar pool anymore, mostly due to the lack of bars with pool tables around here...
But when I did, I played everyone! it's a grate way to meet new people and girls.... and besides, it's boring to play the same people all the time :?
When I was playing in bars, unless it was league or practice with my team, I never used my cue, just a house cue....

We get a lot of drunken rednecks around here, and you never know when you are going to run into a loose cannon. I ran into one last weekend. Fortunately I have learned to dismiss them without instigating a conflict. But I have no problem walking up to a table with a couple of pretty women and inserting myself into their game. Pardon the pun. 8)
although its a friendly match and all in my opinion whether you are playing an opponent that you don't know and in general even though its no comp or playing for beers/table/money it really is considered 'rude' and can actually still be classed as unsportmanship
My father has a habit when I was youger doing that but now has changed it to the aftershot...I really agree with you though but some people can really take it not as a game but as life and death. I think there's also an exception too if ladies and/or doubles played...but always watch your back

I almost always end up playing in a bar. However, I know most of the players and we all have our own cues. If my opponent is using a house cue, so will I...just to keep the game even.
Before I'll speak to anyone about how to shoot a shot, my game or someone elses, I try to remember to make sure it's okay w/ the opponent of the game. No, it's not necessary, but I've seen too many people in bars lose their minds over a game w/ no bet on line.
These are the same people who'll make a shot intended for another pocket and keep shooting. I usually let them, just to see if I can still beat them. It's just a game and not worth fighting over. Now gambling, that's another story. I don't have the stomach to play for more than a beer anyway.
Gambling: the bet is that he can beat you, not you and your friend. But, as I said, I don't have the nerve to gamble and don't mind buying a beer.
My .02 worth.
