View Full Version : Cue Maintence
I was wondering what I would have to get to convert my wood lathe to be able to do basic cue maintence. Such as shaft polishing, retiping, etc. If anyone would be able to help, I would greatly appreciate it.
It is probably not possible.
Most work is done on metal lathes which should/will spin truer.
To work on a tip or ferrule you need to insert through the back of the head stock and clamp down with the tip and ferrule exposed. This requires a large diameter hole through the head stock. You need shaft collets to protect the shaft when you clamp down. You will need a steady rest to hold the back end of the cue from wobbling while spinning.
You could polish shafts on a wood lathe since you have the entire shaft exposed over lathe. Inexpensive cue repair lathes start at around $1800. A foot control is nice so you can have both hands free to work on the cue.
