View Full Version : Viking choice of wood

Although Viking cues offer great playability for the price, I'm unimpressed with their choice of wood. Most of the Vikings I've seen had wood with little to no visual appeal. I recently had a goncalo alves plain jane made by a custom cuemaker, and the wood he chose is drop-dead gorgeous. I understand that Viking's production line can't be held to the same standards as custom cues, but I think Vikings would look a lot better (and they wouldn't have to produce over-the-top designs like in the VM2 series) if they used wood with more character. Even if they had to bump up their prices a few percent, it would be worth it.

Just my $.02

lou,
viking cues are among the best non custom cues on the market .
although i understand what u mean about the wood but, goncalo alves
is considerd an exotic wood, and a good one at that. then again i'm not
a guru when it comes to wood but i hear it a good one, and u do have
a pont..i just ordered a viking and i hope its better than a meucci, that red dot shaft was a bad choice.. but meucci cues are suposed to be good and honestly its not that good.oh!! i found a good web site that talks all about exotic woods native and oterwisw.. just type wood in the yahoo seach and it will come up :)

Viking will give you a cue that has more figured wood than ordinary if you request it, but it is an added cost.

there is nothing wrong with meucci cues... its just that they are more flex shafts.... viking is usually considered mediumstiff-stiff.... predator is also a stiff shaft... IMO meucci is for soft shooters... plus.... it is true that meucci shafts are whippy... but thats not a bad thing.. its just a matter of preference...

I agree that Vikings are great production cues. I once thought I was going to fall into financial hardship, and my first course of action was going to be to sell my customs and buy a Viking. Everything turned out okay, so I was able to keep my cues. I'm still thinking about selling them though, because that's a lot of cash to be tied up in a cue when I can play just as well with a Viking for less than $200. If I decide to go that route, I'll definitely order a cue with more highly figured wood.

Moochie is just glorified firewood with Yiking not far behind. My local cuemaker stays in business because he fixes so much of this garbage.

Brave words from an anonymous poster. I am sure that viking sells so many cues because they are pure trash.

They keep my local cuemaker in business with tons of repairs. As for me, I'll never buy any production cue simply because they're junk.

If I didn't have my Predator Sneaky Pete I'd get a Viking 3-point stick at showcase Billiards in Denver faster that the speed of light. It shoots hellacious.

Are you talking about the VM-32? If I get another Viking, it'll probably be that one.

It's been awhile and I don't remember the model number but it sounds like it. The points are veneered and dark, the forearm a golden color but don't remember anymore specifics. They're asking around $500 for it.

Maybe it was the Viking VM10.

Nope, only 3 points that were veneered with a deep, golden yellow colored forearm. Let me do a search. What I came up with is a hybrid of of VM03 and VM16.
