I would go with viking over the mcdermott, but I'll take any $200 cue over a mcdermott

I would get a McDermott. I had some serious problems with my Viking that I am stuck with. If it were a McDermott it would be covered by warranty.

I REALLY like the lifetime warranty thing offered by McDermott. If you are just starting out, it will be great for you. If you know how to take care of your cues go test hit a couple and make a decision. But with the life time warranty you just CANT lose.

Let me add to the McD bandwagon. I have one and it is well worth it. Really can't go wrong with either, but the warranty thing is kinda nice.

Thanks. I didn't want to spend too much money on a cue being that I am just really getting it to it and I didn't want to not spend a lot of money on one either. I have two friends that are really into pool and one has a Viking and the other has a McDermott, I think that I will see if I can play with their cues a little to help me make up my mind. But right now I am kind of leaning toward McDermott. Any other info would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, one other thing to note: the McD's come with Triangle tips standard. I believe that the Vikings have LePros. The Triangle is a little harder tip, and it is considered to be a better quality tip in terms of playability and consistency of the leather used.

Twenty five years ago, and even then years ago I would have given McDermott the nod. These days I think that Viking has a slight edge.

Grab both of your friends and try their cues side by side. See which feels better. Its all about the feel of the cue. For a cue to fall apart is truly rare and normally when that happens people have been abusing them. (Slamming them on the floor etc.) In either case when you first get the cue inspect it thoroughy.
Check the shaft and butt for straightness
Check the joint for cracks and splits
Check the inlays
Check the tip
Check everything. If it starts off well you shouldn't have a problem with anyone you purchase.

Shot around with my buddies cues for about a hour each and I think that I am going to go with a Viking it was a very hard to decide especially with McDermotts warranty (think McDermott will be my next cue). Thank you guys for all your input.
