Schön is a damn fine cue. While the cues you mentioned are all great cues, I would rank the Schön above them all. The others are a bit more popular, because they are a little less expensive, generally speaking...

Viking, McDermott cues are probably more popular because they are less expensive. Most Schons are $450 and alot of players do not want to spend that kind of money on a cue. While I dont personally like them (too stiff for my liking) they make a fine cue.
I believe that most Schons are over $600

Im sorry I worded that wrong. I meant to say I dont think you can get a Schon for under $450. Im not sure about that though.

While Spartan may not be a fan of the stiff hit of a Schon I think that is what makes them so appealing. While Schon doesn’t pump out cues in the numbers like Viking or McDermott I would still consider them a production cue maker. My experience with "true custom cue makers" has been that, generally speaking, their cues have a hit that is stiffer (like Schon) than what is usually found in a production cue. That means you can get a custom cue hit in for a production cue price (albeit at the high end of the spectrum) with a Schon cue. If you are going to be dropping between $500 to $1500 on a cue I think a player would be hard pressed to do better than a Schon.
As for quality of workmanship and materials in the production cue class Schon is defiantly first rate. And when comparing cues in a given price range only Pechauer can match Schon in the beauty of the woods.

Yes, VIking and Joss are more "popular" than Schon.
Britney spears is popular too... will you buy her album?
I tried my friends STL 14 at nine ball league last night, and I can honestly say it's the nicest hitting cue I've ever shot with. The Schon shaft plays very well at 12.5 mm. The balance is also very good for a cue with stainless steel joint.
If I were to get a new cue I would go with the STL-1 (possibly in bacote, but the birdseye maple is also very nice)
Buy one.
