The only part of the shaft on your break cue that has "finish" on it, is up to about 5 inches up from the joint. We seal the rest of the shaft with wax to prevent the shaft from absorbing moisture, dirt and oils. That wax can be removed with fine grade sandpaper(i.e. 1000, 1200 grit) to expose the wood, but would subject the shaft to the elements.

Yes it is, all of our shafts are treated in an equal manner.
Was the finish or coating on the shaft not to your liking?

Neil, are you saying that it's okay to apply wax to a regular 314 shaft to seal it from dirt as well as the chalk shadow?
If so, is it okay to use MOTHER'S CALIFORNIA GOLD PASTE WAX?

I have never heard of the wax that you mentioned, but many cuemakers use a wax in finishing their shafts.
Southwest cues actually uses gun stock oil. Every cuemaker has their favorite finishing techniques, you might ask your local one what they use.

The aforementioned wax is sold at Kmart. A local cuemaker, Ernie Martinez, told me to use it for waxing the butt without ever saying anything about waxing the shaft.

I sanded the wax off. I noticed it got sticky after a while coz I have some sweaty hands problems when the weather/humidity is high. After sanding off , it was much better and the shaft was looked much whiter than with the wax

We seal the shafts for shipping and storage purposes, otherwise the shaft would be exposed to many unfriendly conditions.
I, personally sand off the finish to about 2 inches above the joint, I am sort of short and stretch often. :?

It isn't bad, but I miss the non-smoking businesses in Los Angeles, the smoke kills me out here.
Then there is the culture shock!! I didn't realize how comfortable I was till I moved to another coast.

I loved living in Smyrna, Georgia. The area offered lots of great food with southern hospitality and friendliness.

I have not been to Georgia yet, I guess I will someday.
People are very friendly in this part of the country, that part I like.
The bugs, the humidity, the lack of mountains and the smoking are pretty bad though.
The job makes up for the rest. :D
