View Full Version : New cloth questions?

Audiopro's thread has me thinking about new cloth.

My table came with Titan cloth and it's already showing a little wear, not enough to replace but I like to plan ahead.

Anywho...what's the difference between Simonis 760 and 860. I notice it's the same price.

That and what makes Simonis preferable. I don't believe I've ever played on Simonis before. I know the Titan cloth plays way better than whatever it is they put on bar tables but I honestly don't know why since it looks like the same stuff?

Thanks in advance for the usual great input.

Go play on Simonis and you'll know why it's better.

I've played on Simonis cloth a few times. It's just different.

I'm not sure that this was great input. Unfortunately, I'm not (nor have I ever been) a Mensa member.

OK, does it roll truer? Does it last longer? Does it have less friction? If I would know it from playing on it what would I know?

If I had a local place I could play on it I would.

Maybe I need someone who has worked for 5 and a half years in worsted wool?

BTW Mensa membership, Or high IQ doesn't make you smarter...that's a myth. High IQ means you have an ability to learn things faster but doesn't mean that you will or that someone of a lower IQ won't.

The prisons and homeless shelters all have people with gifted minds that never applied themself while many very successful people didn't learn things quickly but they stuck with it until they did I once saw a spot on 60 minutes where the highest IQ individual in America was tending bar in NJ and living in a 1 bedroom apartment.

I will admit that through HS and college I coasted, and wish I hadn't, in that I could attend class a minimum amount and study an hour the night before an exam, partied the rest of the time, and earn between a high C and a low A.

I quit HS at 16 because I was bored with it and got my GED and started college also at 16. I left college with a 3.22 GPA after 2.5 years because I had enough hours for a degree but hadn't taken much of the filler courses.

I took the Mensa test as a lark. The minimum to join if I remember is 143? Anyway I scored 147 on their prelim and 159 on their observed test.

From that description I could say I'm a genius and a dumbass both I guess.

afaik, the 860 is typically what is put on 8' tables, and it rolls a little slower than the 760, but not much.

Okay, Erik is definitely on track about this. You have to play on it to see the difference. It is night and day a better feeling cloth. First and foremost though, it is a cloth. Simonis is not felt, does not feel like, look like it, or roll like it. It does roll smoother, faster, and maybe more true.

Judging from the quality, I would say it may last longer, but that is really of no difference to me. The way it plays makes it 100% worth it either way.

You really should look for a pool hall somewhere that has Simonis, and try it out. You will see the difference.

As for installing it, unless you are good with such things, have a pro do it. The Simonis is a lot more difficult to manipulate than felt cloths.

Yes, I am. hehehe

Simonis is definitely not felt. You're right! It is smoother, faster, and possibly more true. It doesn't "pelt" (is that the word?) like felt either, which can cause the balls to roll and bounce funny. When you miss a shot (that you thought you should have made) on a felt covered table, it's not always the level of the table that causes the balls to roll of course. Sometimes it is all the little "pelt" bumps that throws things off. This is why you should brush the table down real good before you play. Unfortunately, some bars and poolhalls do not take very good care of their tables.

I agree. When I get my own table, it will eventually have Simonis on it.

I would definitely find a table with Simonis on it so that you can try it out. It is definitely different.

If you decide to get Simonis for your table, it may be best to have a professional put it on. I have recovered a table with a cheap felt cloth in the past. It wasn't easy. However, I think I did a real good job for a first-timer. I'm not sure I would want to attempt putting Simonis on. Simonis is much more expensive to replace if you screw it up.

Simonis 860 is a cloth that was designed specially for 9ball, it makes the balls roll a bit slower then the simonis 760, with the simonis 860 cloth there is no "napping" (or pelt as erik called it).

Since the Simonis 860 was designed for pro 9ball, performance and playability came first and durability came second, the 760 will last longer then the 860 but even if you play for 3 - 4 hours a day, the 860 should last for at least a year.
