My 314 is 12.75 and it feels good to me. I think that 12.5 would be nice as well, but much thinner than that would feel too thin IMO.
I'm quite used to the 12.75mm of my 314 shaft but I feel comforable with any shaft diameter between 12.5 to 13mm

Anywhere from 12 to 14 is fine for me.. Doesn't matter too much as I use an open bridge a lot, not a closed one..

You you break with an open bridge too?

No, I break from center vert, 1 die up from head horiz, with a two finger, thumb inside, assited bridge off the rail...

i break from the center. on the tourn i play in you have to break from the "box". i dont know how to explain it but anywhere from the two outside diamonds to the spot. you cant break from outside there. even for the pros. it is a foul and loss of game.

In 8 ball, break center half court of the head spot... Middle cue ball, maybe a little low. It will leave the CB mid table, and in a good position to hit something.. Granted, you have to drop something.
You either sink something and leave yourself good for a runout, or nothing drops, and ya leave your opponent open for a runout..

i dont play much eight ball. i play 9 ball, straight pool and one pocket. when i do play 8 ball i break from the side rail second ball break a little below center. i dont hit them too hard but a nice solid break with a spread rack.

i cant remember the last time i played 8 ball. its not too popular up here. i get a better spread with the second ball break. the 8 ball sometimes goes in the side. do you play on 9 or 8 footers greg?

Nothing wrong with 8' tables, other than they are not 9'! J/K
I am a bar box player who sometimes plays on 9's.
At first the 314 seemed too thin but it has grown on me.

When I break with the 13.5mm McDermott it feels like I am bridging a telephone pole rather than a cuestick compared to the 314. I am going to have the McDermott taken down to 13mm.

I like a thin shaft. I've got one of the thinest shafts I've seen, 9 3/4mm. However, I haven't been as happy with it lately so I've ordered a new peachauer cue and am having the shaft turned down to 12mm. I think I'll be happier with that. When I use a 13mm, it feels a little too big for me as well as I have small hands.

Mine are honestly not too thick. I am playing with 12.75 Nitti's. His shafts are not usually that thin, but I had mine made that way. Funny thing is, I have very large hands. But for whatever reason, I just feel right with a thinner shaft... (ha ha, lets not throw out all the jokes, unless you want to.. lol) But good lord, not a 9.75... lol...

I honestly couldn't believe I saw a 9.5mm just yesterday. I was having my old McDermott turned down to a 12mm, and Willee showed me a cue he used for snooker. It was 9.5mm at the tip! That is tiny, but he says most players use 9.75 - 11.00 for snooker. Damn!! 12mm feels really small to me, so I couldn't imagine playing with a 9.5! My wife has super small hands and she couldn't close bridge with a 13mm so when we ordered her McDermott we got her a 12mm as this is the smallest they sell. If you want it smaller you have to have it turned down yourself. She has improved a lot being able to close bridge. So I picked it up and started playing with it. She was mad that I could play better with her cue than my own cue. So now I have a 13mm 12.75mm and 12mm all for my McDermott. I think my 28.5 ounce sledge hammer is like a 13.5mm or even a 13.75mm. I am not sure.

I have had a 9.75mm shaft for 40 years that was my first cue and I love the small diameter. I used it for snooker to begin with but when I switched to 8 ball I continued to use it. It was difficult for me to adjust to a larger diameter shaft but I just got a Pechauer that I had turned down to a 12mm and I like it better after playing with it for a bit. I've only had it about a week so I'm still adjusting to it.
