Talisman water buffalo medium is my favorite...i like the litte bit of extra hardness it has over the regular medium tips.

tiger hard is my tip of choice.
I like a medium tip and since medium tips can go from medium-soft to medium-hard, I like the medium-hard a bit better
Right now I got the Okura medium tip on my 314 shaft and I realy like the way it plays but if you can find a good Talisman Pro Med then it will play great too.

which tips are softer and which ones are harder?
whats the difference between a harder tip and a softer tip?
i know that the softer tips are used for getting more english and hard tips get power like what u use in jump shots. but is there anything else

tips come in soft medium and hard. i believe that the softer tips give you more control and the harder tips give you more power.

I must not have the right hands since I get much better control with a soft tip. I like the Tiger and Moori soft tips equally well.
A phenolic (extremely hard) tip gives me a little more power on my break cue, but it puts little dings on the cue ball reducing its useable life.

Softer tips allow amateaur players to gain more control...while a harder tip can be utilized by a professional for more consistency and spin...at least this is what was concluded in another thread...
Soft tip will produce more english then hard tip period !!!!!
A pro player will be able to get more spin from a hard tip then an amateur would but he will still get more spin from a soft tip.
The soft tip "grabs" the cue ball and there is a longer contact time between the tip and the cue during the hit resulting in more spin, the hard tip "shoots off" the cue ball faster and has less time to apply spin, this whole thing happens in a split of a second and it's not something that you can see but you feel it and you can see it by the action and path of the cue ball.
I'm not a big fan of soft tips but since I'm testing the Okura tips I put a soft Okura tip on my Dufferin, one of the things that I've notice is that if I hit the cue ball unintentionally off the center by a hair I got a lot more spin then I would get with a medium and hard tips, resulting in missing the pocket on long shots, playing with the soft tip made me focus more on hitting the cue ball dead center, this is somthing that I would not notice if I was testing the soft tip on a 314 shaft.

Ok, there we go, soft tips generates more english, my mistake.

i play with a hard tip and i get all the spin i need. i think players who arent getting the spin they want assume its the tip when generally all they need to do is loosen their grip up.

Bingo, I find that if I am not getting the draw that I expect if I loosen my grip a bit it corrects the problem. Sometimes I get back to my old deathgrip without thinking about it. Also, not following through properly will kill the draw shot and a tip will not help rectify that problem either.
mmmm back to lesson 1 - the grip .... lol
it's amazing how you jump balls, masse shoot triple combination etc. but can't grip the cue right on a simple shot, you spend tons of money on stupid accessories to improve your game when all you realy need to do is go back and practice the basics.
That advice applies to most any game/sport/occupation.

It does in most cases. Humans tend to develop bad habits in any physical activity which requires fine motor skills and small motions.

Ok, it is true a soft tip will have more grab, therefore people believe they can get more english. Which it is true. The problem is with the softer tip is you are more likely to drive the ball offline, so what good is the extra english you put on it if your not hitting the object ball where you want? Therefore, you will find most good players prefer a medium to hard tip. One of the best I have found is the Sniper layered tip. It is excellant for english, and has great control. For breaking there are several options, but on my jump break cue I like a water buffalo tip. It is really hard, and it works well for jumping. On my 28.5 ounce club I use for breaking I use an elk master. It is soft and grabs the cue ball good making sure I don't come off the left or right side of the cue, when swinging that much weight.
The problem is with the softer tip is you are more likely to drive the ball offline
that is soooooo wrong, where do you get all your info, I think that you should stop reading and start shooting...
the tip doesn't make you hit off line, you do!!! your stroke is off line!!!

The tip can make you hit the ball offline by grabing the ball too much. Yes it can! You can compinsate for it, and if your any good it won't be a problem. It is just a fact. Most people that are any good don't normally stay with soft tips. Hard or medium hard tips tend to be more accurate.

Yes I said 28.5, but if you would have read it you would see that is a breaking stick only.
I guess that your are too knowledgeable to argue with...
why do most pro players use an 18oz or lighter cues with hard tips as break cue??? while you know better when you use a 28.5oz!!! cue with a soft tip!!!
If a soft tip "grabs" the cue ball for a longer period of time then when applying side spin, you will generate more spin, that will make the CB curve more, but it will not go off line, it'll go where it's suppose to go according to the hit!!! the cue ball can not tell that it was struck by a soft tip!!!

txplshrk, 10 hours on the forum and twenty-two posts. Most of them pure drivel. I haven't seen this bad of a case diarrhea of the keyboard since Eric the pool hustler. This guy needs to get away from the keyboard and spend some time at the table.
