You may have pressed it down too far on the tip, which more than likely made it fit too tightly around the tip and ferrule. I use the UTT all the time to do this and I've never had a problem. It could be that the tip was not glued on very well also. I don't know.

I agree. Unless the UTT was pushed down too tightly around the tip and ferrule. I've never had a problem with the UTT and I do this all the time.

That tiny dot that was left is probably the glue that filled the seepage hole up. Some ferrules have a seepage hole in the top of them. When I remove tips from my ferrule I usually have a little leather stuck on the end that I have to sand off. I agree, I think the tip wasn't on properly.

I really like Porpers burnishing tool. I have the ultimate for shaping, but would not let it touch a ferrle.

I don't think you are supposed to let the UTT touch the ferrule. That is part of the problem here I think. The UTT was pushed down past the tip too tightly causing the UTT to grip the tip real tight. Therefore, when it was turned, it twisted the tip off. Just my guess.

i was doing it with light pressure, and it snagged on one of the turns and popped it right off...i didnt increase the pressure or anything...just light pressure.
and i think what cueball was referring to was trimming with the UTT...as the sand paper is so thick, when it reaches the ferrule, it decides to gouge the ferrule as well...i think the tool is a great concept, but they used the wrong materials...as you can see with the shaper, there is a flat spot on the bottom...they shouldve used a thinner, finer grit type paper, so it'll fit more flush to 1) the shaper 2) the trimmer

Then I would say it was probably the tip installation, or the fact that the UTT snagged the tip while you were turning it.
I never use the sandpaper on the UTT to trim the sides of my tips. There are other methods for doing that and they work much better.
Maybe this would be a better tool:

Using the UTT burnisher is really bad for layered tips. I have seen it already where the layers have just plain seperated. So be really careful if you have to use it.

I have had no problems using the UTT burnisher on my layered tips...Moori & Talisman. I think the person using it just needs to be careful.
