I want to sound halfway intelligent when I say it, so how do I pronounce Schon?
DEATHTRON

Like the name...shawn..at least thats how ive heard everyone pronouncing it...
bobmcq11

Thats what I thought too, "shawn", but I figured also that it could be "Shone", so thats why I asked.
ThePoolHustler

I believe it is pronounced like the word "shown". I don't know. That is how I've always pronounced it. It's also the way that I have always heard it pronounced.
Contact someone at Schon and ask them. lol

Erik is correct. "Shown" is how it is pronounced.. If you want, pronounce it "Shawn" and if anyone asks, tell them "Tomayto Tomahto."

I have always heard it pronounced "shone."
Schön is the german word for beautiful.
Click the following link, on the right of the word schon there is a small speaker, click it and you can download a sound file that will let you know how it should be said

It sound like "shun" to me, which is different than "shawn" and "shown". What does everyone else think? Maybe we are all wrong. Who knows!?!?!

If you listen to the recording of the word on the site that Skor posted, it sounds like "shun". That is just my opinion. Maybe I hear things funny.
Has anyone else listened to it? If so, what do you think it sounds like?

That's right Skor. However, I used an $800+ Schon for about a month. I played about 6-8 hours per day with it. I didn't like it as well as my two Cuetecs. I know, I know...everyone probably thinks I am crazy. This is just my opinion. I played better with my two Cuetecs. Maybe because I was used to them and played a lot of pool with them. I practiced a lot with them too. I have played pool with many different cues, but not as well as when I played with my Cuetecs. I'm not sure why, other than I just played and practiced a lot with the Cuetecs.

of course it doesn't really matter how its pronounced at least as far as winning a game of pool. But if your talking with someone and you mispronounce it it makes you look like you don't know what your talking about. If you pronounce it right then it gives you a bit of credability.
As it pertains to this topic I would say it DOES matter because no one is tring to win a game in here its merely just conversation.

Mr. Dags is a man with a highly regarded opinion around here and a lot of us take his words to heart. Please try to be more understanding with him when things don't go right. He is a good man, you're lucky to have him around. :D
You guys are speaking english and your talking about the pronunciation of a german word, none of will probably get it right but everybody will know what you mean, forget german for one second and let's talk english, if I would record 10 people of ten different states saying the word "coffee" or any other word I would get ten different results there will be difference in pronunciation and there will be an accent difference but still everybody will understand that you ment coffee and no one will make fun of you, it has nothing to do about your credability and on that note, how would you pronounce "Pechauer"

I think I have had my Schon about ten years now. The model was st14 but it was quite different than the st14 in the catalog. The current STL15 model is almost exactly like my Schon. The difference being the buska rings have gray dyed maple along with the ebony and ivory and all the red in the STL15 is gray in my cue

I would pronounce this.... peck hour ... am I right? lol
I believe the "ch" makes a "k" sound if I am not mistaken. I did pretty well in English. And the "auer" is like the word "bauer". It should sound like "hour". Bauer makes hockey equipment, and other things, if you didn't know.
Let's call them and ask them. Give me a number and I will get you the answer.

As for coffee...I pronounce it as "cough-e". Cough-e is good if you mix Internationl Delight french vanilla creamer and chocolate cream creamer together and put some sugar/splenda in it. You can put whipped cream on top too. YUMMY! Tim Horton's is good too. I usually have to wait an hour before I can drink it though. It is so hot when you get it. Maybe I should spill it on myself and sue. hehehe

We will have a few guest star roles now and then. You are welcome to be a guest star at some point. You will either play against Fury or myself. You will have to dress up as a Ninja. We don't play for money. We play for heads, arms, legs, fingers, toes, etc. There will be lots of smoke and fireworks too. It will be like a rock concert, boxing match, or even a UFC fight. We will enter the arena with music blasting. It's going to be quite an act. It's going to turn the pool world upside down. lol
We just need some financial backers now? Anyone interested?

Regarding the New Jersey vs. New York banter. . .Nothing wrong with living in New Jersey and commuting to New York--just think how many New Yorkers communte to see the Statue of Liberty, Giants, and Jets in New Jersey. . .
the proper way of pronouncing it is like "shern" the o umlaut is said like an er sound
TrickyRicky
01-02-2007, 06:53 AM
It IS pronounced similar to "SHOON" or "SHERN", IFFFF you speak German. It literally means "nice". But most of us yanks pronounce it "SHONE" (which, BTW, literally means "already", and is spelled "schon" without the two dots). We pronouce it this way because it's easier and less blunt sounding. For example, I have a "SHONE" stl9 and a "SHONE" stl13. Doesn't that just sound better than "SHERN" stl9?
Isn't it ironic though that an american custom cue company adopted a german word for it's name! Maybe they were drinking a little too much german BEER when the decision was made  !!! Oh well, they still make superior cues!
