Well we finally did it. Our team finally gave up trying to win at league. We are currently ranked 8th in our league. We haven't had any luck that wasn't bad for like 5 weeks. But wouldn't you know it, last night we played the 4th ranked team and threw them one hell of a beating. Finally, no pressure. I am going to feel really stupid if we win now for not just having that mind set all along. Think I will get a tattoo on my left hand that says "It's only a Game". New team motto perhaps? It is truly amazing how much thinking about winning affects your ability to win.

All you need to do is focus on your next shot and that's it !! and before you know it, you'll be shooting the last ball to win the match ;)

Question Skor. What if your opponent is focusing on his next shot? Then who will be shooting to win the match?

Give up? What are you talking about? Don't you know that when you walk down the street as a member of a first place team people lay their jackets down on puddles for you when you cross the street, and on hot days cool you by gently fanning you with palm fronds. And for the players that are not on a first place team? People will snigger behind their backs about what losers they are. And besides, think about all the money invested each week. League is a money making proposition. What does first place pay out? $20.00 less per week shot than what you average spending on your league night out? Oh, and don't forget the cheap POS trophy's that get put away in a box in the basement. You need to have something for your heirs to throw out after you are dead.

It is only a game. And if shooter can’t enjoy the camaraderie of his teammates and opponents when he (or the team) is loosing then his teammates and opponents probably don’t enjoy that players company when he is winning.

I have this philosophy that if what I am doing today doesn’t change the fact that I have to get up and go to work tomorrow than it really isn’t very important. I know that is overly simplistic but for many things in life it is true. Pool leagues, tournaments, and even the Packers, win or lose I still have to get up and go to work the next day.

Good to see a dags post again!!!

I have a similiar philosophy. I do not make my living playing pool, so if I lose... No big deal...

You can not and should not think about your opponent or what he does, when you're on the table, it's you and the table, your opponent can not stop you when he is in his chair, the less you miss, the less table time your opponent get and less chances to beat you, when you miss a shot, it's not your opponent who made you miss it's YOU who miss.

Just as my opponent cannot stop me when he is in his chair I cannot stop my opponent when I am in my chair. The point being that any player can be shooting the best pool of thier life and still be beaten, sometimes at the hand of a weaker player.

I can stop my opponent when he is at the table. If I suddenly deliver a running-jump-side-kick to his chin it would probably stop him, but it may not be looked at as very sportsmanlike LMAO.

Damn, wrong again. And this time it was not Mrs. Dags pointing out my failings. I stand corrected!

True, it does work both ways and when you're in your chair there is nothing you can do and yes sometimes we get beaten by a weaker player.
But my point was that when you're the one on the table, your mind should be blank nothing should bother you, not the music, not the score and not who is your opponent, it's just you and the table, think 3 balls ahead realize how you want to hit your next shot and when you go down to take it, the only thing on your mind should be this shot and nothing else.

I know what you are talking about and I agree with you totaly Skor. I guess the point I am trying to make is that someone has to loose. And even if you are doing everything perfectly that some one may still be you. In a tournament, be it 16, 32, 64, or 128 players, the one contant is that everybody, except one player, is goint to loose thier last game. There is no shame in not winning, only in not putting forth you best effort.

This should be the motto of every athlete in any sport

never give up. and still worry about winning just take it one shot at a time... Make the shot your shooting the most important thing in your life at that moment....

If your going to try something you may as well do it right.
