Okay so I was watching The Color of Money again last night. At the end Eddie challenges Vince to a match. After a little going back and forth he accepts and they begin to play. We are left with Eddie breaking the rack...
So as the subject says.. Who do you think won and why?
I voted for Fast Eddie. He pretty much taught Vinnie everything he knows, and even trained him. I think a Trainer would easily know their students weakness and so forth. I'll admit that Vinnie's a smart guy, but he's very cocky and I think that would have costed him the game with his "teacher".
Just my Seybert's 2 cent! ;)
I don't know who won, but did you notice that they lag for the break and then Eddie breaks without anyone racking 8)

The first thing I did when I decided to work on my techincal ability and stop relying on my natural ability to play pool well was to buy Fast Eddie Parker's video. And since the Fast Eddie character was rumored to be based on Eddie Parker, and I hate cocky pool players, I vote for Eddie.
Although he devoted very little time to table strategy on the video, my favorite part was when he was explaining 8 ball strategy and ran out a rack seemingly without even paying attention to the table. To me, that is a player that isn't going to lose many games against any caliber of player.

I voted for Vincent, he can turn it on and become unbeatable when he wants to and I feel that in that game he would not "dump" like he did in the tournament and let Eddie win.

I voted vincent. Eddie did not teach Vincent how to play, just how to hustle. Besides, if Vincent wins, it gives Eddie a reason to keep travelling the circuit and trying to beat him.
Skor: Eddie had already racked the balls. He was tapping them when Vincent walked in. They lagged with 2 cue balls, I believe.

You're right, I haven't seen that movie in some time ;)

I'm gonna have to go with Vince also. As said above Eddie didn't really teach him anything about playing pool, just the hustle. And if Vince was holding back and able to dump a game with those shots like he did, I dont think Eddie could remotely handle his game.
I wonder if anyone would ever do a third movie to follow up. They definitely left it open with how they closed this one.
Sometimes a player with lots of experience will beat a player that on paper is better, Eddie has that, he's been around longer and seen more shots and table pattern then Vince, the great Willie Mosconi could still give a good fight to the top players right to the day he died.
The color of money and the Hustler were both based on books by Walter Tevis, he didn't write a third book, and making a third movie without having it based on a book by the same writer will probably suck and the characters will be shallow compared with the originals, But I would love to see a new good pool movie and have Paul Newman and Tom Cruise have a guest appearance.
I voted for Vince...he had more confidence in his game then Eddy. Also, Tom Cruise actually made most of the shots in his scenes, left handed and right handed, only on the jump shots was someone else shooting.

I think Vince would have won. :D
If a game of pool was betweem Tom Cruise and Paul Newman, I think that Paul would win, Paul learned to shoot pool from Willie Mosconi while working on The Hustler, Paul noted a few times that working with Willie was great fun and that he would spent many hours on the practice table with Willie, he actually learned the game and was tought by one of the game greatest, Tom did only the easy shots in the movie, Steve Mizerak and Mike Sigel did the rest, BTW Mike Sigel is the one that did the jump shot.

Skor, would you happen to know if it was really Tom Cruise who broke the balls or was it someone else?
Thanks.
Skor. I worked with a cousin of Willie Masconi, who also learned from him...and he couldn't shoot worth a sh..it. I was impressed with some of the outtakes of Cruise shooting right and left handed...noting that he took the time to actually learn how to play. Now, Paul Newman can drive a race car much much better, even though he never made a movie about it, sometimes it is not the teacher...but the effort you put into it.
BTW...I could beat both Paul and Tom in a game of straigth pool...anyone that doesn't believe me...just arrange the game. :?
audio,
After watching The Hustler, especially the picnic scene with Eddie's great monologue on how it feels to shoot great pool, and Vince thinking that 9 ball is easy and STOKER is THE game, do you still think that Vince has enough "heart" to beat Eddie, especially when Eddie is the one with the need to prove something, maybe to himself

I would vote for Keith McCready if he were on the poll....he was the the real pool pro that played a part in the movie. But since he is not, I'll vote for Eddie....he learned his lesson against Fats years ago... :D mike

After watching the Hustler I definitely admit that Eddie has more heart for the game. The thing is though, I have a lot more heart for the game than a lot of people, but they still smack me around the pool table. I think that may be the case with Vince. I think his talent is just to much even for Eddie's desire to win... However, if they had one of those 30 hour marathons, ehh... It might be a different story...
There were more then one "real" pro player in the movie like :
Jimmy Mataya
Grady Mathews
Steve Mizerak
Howard Vickery
But there is no doubt that the two best 9 ball players in that time were Keith McCready and Nick Varner
Read the book "The color of money" by walter tevis.
Vince is not in the book. The book is all about Eddie,it is much better than the film.
Anyway I think eddie would have won, go with the old guy.

I just cant justify vince winning after seeing the hustler.

Wow, this is a great question that seems to have the room split. I also voted for Fast Eddie mainly becuase Eddie is the man. After an embarrasing defeat and showing his ass in the Hustler He has grown and well like someone before said id take him just becuase he is an older guy He most likely knows more about the game.
However now that i think about it Im not so sure given that fast eddie did get hustled against that guy at the pool hall... I would guess that Vince would of killed him.
Great discussion Audiopro!
I agree it would make a great 3rd movie start for them to show who WON

I personally think that the match is best left as a mystery...

Thats a long time to know someone...
Oops, nevermind.. Forgot you're not old like some of us.. ;)
I'd maybe have to agree.. Kinda like The Matrix.. After seeing Reloaded and Revolutions, it almost made the first movie seem like crap. While before I saw them, I thought it was one an excellent potrayal of a neat concept.

Id like to see a slammin' sequel. I think thatd be cool, but itd have to be tastefully done, which in this day and age, probably wont happen.

i love the university of texas about as much as my good friend deathtron loves camaros... unt, more like whont?
Although i do agree that a sequal probably wouldn't be up to par. I thought that collateral was a pool movie when i first saw tom cruise in the preview with a stack of franklins.
