1. How low is it from the ferrule when you have to replace your tip?
2. This older gent in my pool room, he barely has 1 mm left on the side of his cue tip but he has a lot action from the cue ball. He can put the object ball on the other end of the table and put the cue ball like 6 inches from the other end, roughly 8.8 feet and he can pocketed the ball and drew his cue ball all the way back to the end rail.
3. Thank's
with layered tips I'll replace it when I get down to the two last layers.
with a regular tip, I will replace it when it about 2-3mm high.
in any case I'll replace the tip at any point if I feel the tip does not perform well.
I used to use Black diamond tips, one lasted me 6 months and played great untill I replaced it (was down to the last two layers), the one I replaced it with (same type, from the same batch), I took off after 6 weeks, It got to hard and I couldn't play with it.
for the last couple of months I have Talisman med and it plays great, I'm sure it will last 3 or 4 more months

It just hard for me to see that the cue tip can be worn out by playing Unless you sand it down alot. A cue maker told me that unless a cue tip is being sand down a lot, it will be good for a year or so. is that true?
thank's

Yeah, a lot of it depends on how much the tip is shaped, scuffed, etc. Some people do too much to the tip, and sometimes the tip is not very good and requires a lot of maintanence.
a softer tip will lose it's shape faster then a hard tip, so they have to be replaced more often.
I like the medium type of hardness, for me it feels and performs better and you also get to benefit from both worlds, but if soft tip was my thing I would have used it regardless of how often I'll need to shape it or replace it, performance is everything, I can afford replacing 2-3 tips a year (I do it myself anyway :) )

I have always heard that you should replace your tip when it is the width of a dime. If you leave your tip too long, you are hitting the ball with ferrule as well as your tip. This is bad, especially if you have a ivory ferrule. Replacing a tip is a heck of a lot cheaper than changing a cracked ferrule.

It's preference. I use Moori III Med tips on most of my cue shafts. For a Moori III M, I like to shape like a dime radius and only leave about a 1/16 to 3/32 of an inch of tip side above the ferrule. The Moori's maintain this shape well and about all I do from there is tip pik the surface once in a while just to keep that baby holding chalk. With the short sides, I find the sides don't break down if I'm hitting with extreme draw or extreme English. They don't let the cue slide or jump away.
