View Full Version : Waxing cue shafts

06-20-2004, 11:42 AM
Ive been using the Q series of cleaners for a while now and it does a fantastic job. I try to keep my hands clean and wipe my shaft down after playing but being in Fl the humidity is so high that it only takes a couple of days before my cue is so sticky that I feel I need to clean it again. Ive heard of people using wax (one guy told me he used floor wax) on their shafts and was wondering if that could prolong the slick feel. If so, are there any recommendations on what kind I should use.

I use Q wax, which I believe is just pure carnauba...or IOW not cut with and petro chemicals.

It works great as far as Im concerned.

just use a hand towel to clean it every few racks and use some baby powder, don't put anything that you might regret

Skor,

I would not use baby powder. It clumps. I would use talc instead.

I use Meguiar's Quik Wax - Carnuba - non-abrasive. I spray it on a rag, rub it on my shaft, wait a minute, then wipe it off real good. This works great.

You can get this wax in the automtive section of almost any retail store.

talc = baby powder

Most of the pros carry Johnson & Johnson baby powder in their cases
I use Nivea baby powder, it's just the same 8)

Baby powder is meant to clump. That is why they use it in baby diapers to absorb moisture. It gets thick and sticky. I would never use pure baby powder. I have read quite a few articles online and in pool books (written by professional players) stating not to use baby powder for this same exact reason.

This is just my .02 cents based on my experience and what I have read.

It depends on how sweaty your hands get. I do not use baby powder or rosin. However, I have tried both. I used both correctly. Rosin worked better for me. I prefer to simply wipe my cue shaft, butt, and hands off with my shirt or a towel. I never have any problems with the slickness of my shafts. I don't use a glove either. IMHO, you don't really need to use all of this fancy stuff.

it shouldnt get sludgy. i use a wet paper towel and maybe the cue clean kit once a month. my shafts are always smooth.

The baby powder might work for some people. I just wouldn't use it myself because of the reasons I have given. I would prefer not to use anything other than a towel and some carnuba wax once in awhile. I do clean my shaft off all the time with Murphy's Oil Soap and water too. I mix them up...50/50...spray it on a rag, wipe down my cue, then immediately dry it off. Works great!

This sticks in my head and I don’t remember who to attribute it to. While paraphrasing, the idea it goes something like this: Many powders, baby powders included, are primarily talc. It is the ingredients that are added (often times corn starch or zinc oxide) that can cause the problems. Regular use of baby powder make your shaft sticky requiring more use of powder or more frequent cleaning. Kind of like drinking salt warter to cure your thirst. Instant relief but actualy makes the problem worse.

As a point of interest some manufactures are going away from talc as a base for their powders. Talc is a magnesium trisilicate mineral, which in its natural form may contain asbestos.

This is somewhat what I have been trying to say. There is pure talc and there is baby powder with talc and other ingredients. For some of the reasons you paraphrased above, this is why I will not use these products on my shafts.

I agree. I mainly just use my shirt or a towel to wipe down my cue. Sometimes I use the papers, but very rarely.

It looks like you got something against me! do we know each other?
Yeah I use baby powder just like 99% of pro pool players....
Yeah I use spit to burnish the tip, just like most pool players....
Do you know better? why don't you share your info instead of just criticizing every thing I say......
Get a life !!!!!!

Baby powder. Spit

I do use spit to burnish but I do not use babypowder or talc. What I do do is constantly wash my hands. Perhaps I am a bit obsessive/compulsive on this matter.

If I was living in Wisconsin then maybe I wouldn't use talc either, like I hardly use any around winter but summer time here is very humid and very loooooong.... and sometimes the A/C does not work that well so I have to either use talc or a glove.... I rather use talc 8)

Regarding the talc vs. baby powder question, I'll throw in the little I know. I once did a great deal of diving on shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. We wore wetsuits to protect against the cold. To get these bad boys on, we would sprinkle talc inside the suit. The maufacturers warned against using baby powder because it contained perfume that was bad for the neoprene. Don't know if that would harm wood, but you might be able to seduce your opponent and then ravage them.

I just noticed the next newest post to this thread is about a year and a half old. Nothing like arriving late to the party.

for wax, i've had good results with mohawk blue label paste wax. it's an industrial wax designed for floors and furniture. i tried this on advice from predator, this is what they use on their shafts at the factory.

Recently I've started using baby powder too and it was great! I was using it on the final of the local championship and I could play a great pool (set together my play without using talc).
However I did feel its scent and after using it my shaft got scented too - but just a little bit and I also used to clean my shaft regularly so that shouldn't be a problem...

I meant to compare rosin to baby powder. I would recommend using a rosin bag instead of baby powder. Baby powder absorbs moisture. It clumps. It turns to sludge. It gets thick and sticky. I would not want this on my hands or cue. Rosin does not do this. Baseball players use rosin bags.

PH,
I was a pitcher for years and I've got to tell you, we use the rosin for GRIP, not for slip. Same application for bullriding.
Are you sure you meant to say rosin???
Respectfully,
Kato
