View Full Version : Anybody have cars as toys?

The MINI joined the family a couple of months ago. Now the problem is deciding which one to drive when I feel the urge to challenge the twisties. Kinda like having two favorite cues!

My choice would still be the BMW. I drove a 745i for a few months and they are just such solid cars. Every inch of a BMW is built with superior construction quality in mind. My girlfriends father has a Mini himself. While they too are fun cars, it is still not a BMW!!!!
Congrats on the addition Nick! Wonderful pics! Do feel free to let us know how she handles when ya hit the S!
Does a previous owner of a Fiero count? *snickers*

Oh yeah, I guess I could kinda say yes for having cars as toys.
Not so much in my old age now. And now that I have the money to spend on such things, I find myself not wanting to spend it on cars. I used to build show cars ranging anywhere from 50k to 300k in value. They were however, always for other people!!! At the time I always told myself when I had the money it would be my turn. Now I have the money, but don't wanna spend it yet...
I think I am holding out for the time to do a ground up on a 67 Camaro... :)

audiopro

For a relatively new one 2000 or so, you can pick up around 60k-70k. I new one will run closer to 100k..

Nope, not mine. My maintenance is not much more than normal. I did it the right way, the smart way. ;)
Keeping it in the garage eh?
audiopro
05-17-2004, 04:49 PM
lol.. yeah, no matter how ya do it turbos stress an engine more and the turbo itself gets tired. They are supposed to, it's what makes em go faster. Just like adding laughing gas. Kinda the nature of the beast I guess. :)

The MINI outperforms the Z3 by a slight margin. The Z3 is a dead stock 2.5L, except for a front strut brace, and the 1.6L MINI has a Cooper Works kit and a K&N cold air intake for a little over 200hp. The extra 40hp over a standard supercharged MINI makes a really big difference in torque and acceleration. The MINI corners like it’s on rails! It does a 90º surface street corner at 35mph with practically no body roll and no sign that it’s close to breaking loose.
They both have close to the same wheelbase, while the MINI has about a 6” wider track. The MINI is about 400 lbs lighter, but has a little less torque than the 6-cyl BMW. The Z3 has a lot of chassis twist, but the MINI shows little or no twist even when crossing speed bumps at an angle. They both put a huge smile on my face when I drive them!
My favorite twisty is a 12 mile stretch in the San Gabriel Mountains with between 240 and 250 curves in that distance - no side roads and no driveways, practically no traffic, and no law enforcement except for Friday evenings and weekends when the teenagers come out to play. I can do it in just under 16 minutes in the Z3 and just over 15 minutes in the MINI. Lighter wheels/tires and bigger brakes should further reduce the MINI’s times.
I’ve always liked cars as toys. I used to have a dead stock ‘51 split-window VW and a ‘57 oval-window with a 1900cc engine as well as a hippie Mico-Bus. Let them go 20 years ago for about 15% of what they’re worth now. Wish I'd kept them!
If you like the Lotus, you should take a look at the Elise. Little, fast, low cost, and coming to America soon.
314 of Fury - -
I’m with you about the blowers - love that sound at wide open throttle!
Yeah, the girl across the street has the silver Boxster. About an even match for the Z3 in the twisties.

I have no added ring wear, no added valve seal wear, no turbo seal leaks, no oil leaks at the oil pan, nothing. I change my oil religiously and check over the cooling system (added large radiator + lower temp thermostat + manual fan switch), etc. I have over 121k miles on the car and it has been turbocharged for over 20k of those. Needless to say I do not garage it, it is my daily driver. ;)

That defies physics though man. With turbo cars you lose the low end and make up for it with higher RPM's. Higher RPM's dictate higher engine wear. So unless your driving like grandma all the time... :)

Mobil 1 rocks!!! That's all I use in both my '92 325i and my '99 M3. The 325i has just over 150,000 on it. I have it as far as you can modify it to keep it in SCCA "Street Prepared" class. Conforti chip, K&N cone intake, overbored throttle body, under-sized crank pulley, Eibach sway bars, strut braces front and rear, Bilstein shocks and struts, gas-slotted rotors, Delrin shock mounts, adjustable strut mounts, three sets of 17 inch wheels and tires...Michelin all weathers for the winter, Bridgestone SO2 Pole Positions for the summer and BF Goodrich G Force R compounds for the track!!!
The M3 is stock except for an X brace and only has 26,000 miles on her. She only comes out when the sun is out. She is the cause for a greater number of "moving violations" than is the 325i, however.

The rear side windows were built from fiberglass and motorized with linear actuators. The second pics is a Mustang that was originally a buds, then became mine.. I did all the work on both vehicles.

Nah, parted with it a long long time ago. That was from 1993... Since then I have gotten old and boring when it comes to cars. Wish I had cataloged more of the cars I had worked on. I have a bunch of pics, but all from back before the digital camera days of course. And I have not owned a scanner in years.
The stang was fun. My buddy and I designed and built a 4 cylinder that pushed upwards of 230 ponies and 275bs torq, without a bottle. Transfered to the wheels via a custom racing tranny.
It was not uncommon for us to dust the stock 5.slows.
DZ314
05-18-2004, 11:43 AM
That's alot of torque for a 4 cyl, being a Honda guy I should know. :P
Non-aspirated engines need cylinder count to make gobs of torque. Was it boosted?
audiopro
05-18-2004, 11:47 AM
Supercharged. The entire engine was built around a custom built weiand supercharger (bet ya never expected that setup), and 3" exhaust. All the internals were computer designed and configured before engine construction began. Worked at a huge engine machine shop at the time, gotta love endless free resources!

Actually I am somewhat familiar with those parts on the old Mustangs. An old neighbor of mine was big into Mustangs years ago and was building his up and I would visit him and check it out now and then. Those old superchargers sure would get the job done.

I think the funniest thing ever done in this car was the following. We all know Mustangs were not built to handle curves.. AT ALL.... Well my buddy was actually the driver for this story. We hit the curves with an Eagle Talon (DSM, Same as Eclipse or Laser) right on our ass. So Matt just starts nailing these curves, I'm watching behind us.. And I remember yelling, you got em you got em you got em, OHHHH HE LOST IT!!!!
Somehow we stuck sweet to these curves and a friggin Eagle Talon lost it and spun out.. Now how does that happen.. Well, we did do our share of small track racing.. But wow... :)
DZ314
05-18-2004, 12:56 PM
The Talons are supposed to handle better than the Mustang, but I guess you must account for the driver haha. :D
audiopro
05-18-2004, 01:02 PM
Yeah, by far! I later owned an Eclipse myself. Same exact car for the most part except the emblems. And it handled quite swimmingly..
We just got lucky I spoze.. Ahh, those were the days... :)

I have baited more than one fellow motorist to go though a tight twisty and try to stay with me. My suspension and tires were better than theirs I guess as each of them either had to slow way down or they went off the road. One was a newer Mustang GT, and the other that I remember was the new Sentra SE-R VSPEC. :D
No cars for me. I have a Honda Magna motorcycle, which will do 0-60 in 3.4 seconds. It tops out at 130, though. :(

The Magna is not a croth rocket I dont think. More of a cruiser...

Hey, it's a cruiser, and it's quick. It's a V-4, 750 CC, which means that it's a lot faster than a comparable (or even much larger) V-twin. The only Harley that has a chance is a V-Rod.
audiopro
05-18-2004, 02:51 PM
Watch me get flamed for this...
Harleys suck man! Unless of course you want a bike that leaks oil after the first 6 months.. Oh, and why must people make them obnoxiously loud!?!?
I would think Harley would be built better than the Kawaski (Cows) (Dirt bike/off road) or even a Suzuki.
If ya take the muffler off of a quad or dirt bike, it sounds really awesome (But it's a killer on your engine so don't do it)
audiopro
05-18-2004, 03:07 PM
lol, I have always owned Honda CR's dirtbikes.. My bro had a couple Yamahas. His street bikes though have all been exclusively Honda's.. They are really the best built bikes in my opinions. Save some of the exotics like the upper end Ducatis. But bang for buck, Honda..
Deb, you like the Harleys eh? I think they can be reall pretty bikes, I just wish people didnt feel the need to make em so damn loud. It's ridiculous and offers little performance gain.
I used to own a old `75 Honda 750cc roadbike that was converted to off road fun ( I was only 14 or 15 yrs old at that time) then I owned a 98 Yamaha Blaster with couple mods to up the top end (SLOW POKER but at least I picked a 2 stroker over a thumper).
I've ridden a 250cc honda CR..loved it..but was a lil too big for me..had awesome low end deliverance. (Of course..I spun out when I was trying to take off...dammit....) hehe
I'm in the market to purchase a 125cc dirt bike....prolly be either Honda or Yamaha. I don't know..I haven't decided if I want a dirt bike or a quad. *shrug* Couch is awfully comfy! and if I get a couch it would be a Banshee but they're soooo darned expensive and their powerband is bit tricky to stay in.
If I was to buy a street bike...it would be for sure a honda.
Harleys are allright..just not my style...just like some designs. Not the noise when they drive by me or the house. Yes indeed...annoying.

Getting a CR125 is my vote.. Although, I don't know how you have the energy for it.. I am to old and beat down to do such things anymore. I think if I took a single table top my knees would explode and take out half a stadium!!!
Hehehe..you are only as old as you think you are. I just keep telling myself I'm a kid..I can do that!.
Fortunately I have never "crashed" severely to cause serious damage to myself *knock on wood* and I never crashed when I did a 10 foot jump off with the Yamaha Blaster (and the shocks on that damn thing sucks too!!)
Never done table top yet....haven't had a decent ride to attempt it....did double jumps of course.
So I look at it as a challenge and that alone gives me the energy. You should try it sometime.
Altho I can't be as wild as I used to be because of this job :) I still need my legs and arms so I gotta make sure I don't wreck myself too badly....otherwise the guys here at Seybert's will break my bones! hehe

When I was first learning to ride it was on a YZR100.. I had not yet learned the brake/accel methods of evening out the bike. Took a table top and instead of the bike leveling out it shot straight up.. I jump off at the peak, which from the table top was maybe only 10 feet most, but I landed in the ditch next to the table top which was already 15 feet tall. So I had a nice 25 foot drop.. Knocked the wind out of me good.. Took all I had to pick the bike up and walk off the track.. I was hurting..
OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!
Dang...25 foot drop....I'm surprised ya even got up and took your bike and walked away. I would have stayed there till everybody went home..hahahaha ;)

Well it was a bit of a muddy splash down, so that padded the fall.. There was a few inches of water, but the dirt underneath was quite softened, not that it made it feel any better, just stopped the breaking of bones I think..
To make it worse, I was out riding for 6 hours that day, never ate or drank anything. Had a nice little heat stroke and almost passed out... Talk about dumb.. Remember, I told ya I was born dumb!! :)

LoL i heard that Deb... once snowboarding (which i love) it was the last run of the day so i was going all out and decided to go for the triple black diamond run which was all big jumps. Well i was nailing every jump and when i got to the last one it was dark so i could barely see anything and i miss timed the landing and fell flat on my ass bone...OUCH!!! im not sure exactly how high i was but i know it was high as hell. I layed their for like an hour thinking i broke my ass and then finally when i realized no one else would be coming i somehow got down the hill and limped to the car but dam it was a shitty experience ill tell ya that.

Time slips? HA! Shes too old to go to the track, i have a feeling id be picking up the driveline of the pavement after a lunch on a properly prepped track.
Anyways, theres nothing wrong with imports, the thing i hate is that some of the guys with not fast cars think they are fast. Example, just because you put an exhaust on your civic doesnt mean youre much faster at all. I remember back when my brother still had his 924 (only like 147hp or something like that) i murdered a civic on the highway. I was minding my business when he started revving and doing fly by's and wouldnt leave me alone. So i dropped it into third and let it rip, i never saw that car again.

RICERS... To me a ricer is someone who first has a standard import usually a honda and add unnecessary exterior effects to make it look fast such as a huge spoiler, ground effects, carbon fiber hood, loud exhaust, aztec tail lights and have this all with a standard package with little to no engine mods at all. This to me the definition of a ricer and a flamer.
I have a 95 honda accord but i drive it as it is a honda i dont put flashy decals on it or a big spoiler. To do so would take away from the car as it is and also attract unnecessary attention (5 0).
To me if i was going to mod out a car i would sell my honda and buy somehting i would really love and not something i could buy that was cheap to begin with (at least performance wise). My honda accord is a passenger vehicle not a ferrari so i will treat it as such.............. "To each is own"
So cue of fury i don't think you are a ricer necessarily cause you have the balls under the hood to back it up. but because of these ricers (or flamers) you will always be put in that catagory weather you can back it up or not. The fun for you though is backing it up. Must be fun.
DZ314
05-19-2004, 02:27 PM
Only ignorant people would call me a ricer. I have no stickers, no body kit, no BS like that. I am all about performance only.

05-19-2004, 02:35 PM
I think that honda's in general are looked at as kid & wife cars and don't have any business being fast and if they are its VERY RARE. That has been my experience but I can respect that and to each is own.

A lot of hard-core domestic owners believe that it is "not right" when 4 cyl imports run 6's and 7's along with the big V8's and larger engines. I say the only thing that is not right is their attitude about it! ;)
This is what I am talking about. Open-mindedness helps! :P

Your quest for more horse power is fine. Breaking the law and endangering the our collective health is another thing. But to advertise and flaunt it openly ........ Seriously though, cat systems have become a lot more efficient. the extra ponies you get out of removing it are almost nil. The arguement can go both ways. But it is a violation of a pretty serious law. The fines if caught will easily make ya wish you had not pushed for that extra 5 trotters..

No it wont save it if just you polluting but if every person in the world started blowing as much smoke out your pipe. (pun intended) we would have over 7 billion people polluting instead of one.... BIG DIFFERENCE... Don't give me that im small in a big world crap. The things you do make a difference no matter how in signifigant they might seem to you. It's not a question of one person saving (or destroying) the world. It's not a question of what prior generations did. The past is the past and it cannot be changed. It's not even a question of conforming. It is a question of doing what is right.
Some years ago I my five year old son lay on the table in the emergency room with a sever asthma attack. He looked up at my wife and I with sad and pained eyes and asked us if he was going to die. If that doesn't rip your heart out as a parent I don't know what will. As my son grew into adult hood he outgrew his asthma but when he was young it was a couple of trips a year to emergency.
The point I want to make is that the choices we make today affect not only us but the lives of our children and our children’s children. We shouldn’t intentionally make their lives more difficult or through our silence and inaction give tacit approval to those who do.

Fury, I am somewhat surprised. For a couple reasons. 1. If I remember correctly you are a concealed weapons carrier, by permit. Statisically we are some of the most law abiding citizens. And probably more importantly number 2. Your sig quotes a scripture from the bible. Doesn't the bible also tell us to obey the law?
Romans 13:5
Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.

As for the big rig comment, there is no more fuel efficient and less polluting method to transport great weights. Even so, even GE is designing more efficient and less polluting locomotives.

Wow COF I am very surprised by your attitude. Of course no one here as any right to tell you what to do, but dam dude chill out. All Dags is trying to do is remind you that it COULD be a problem. If you don’t agree fine, disagree no one wants to force you to agree with what they are saying. The very least you could do is have some compassion and respect for dags and what he said; I don’t know the man and you are right this is an internet discussion room. But in here it would be nice if everyone were respectful in these debates (especially to dags, who i have grown to respect what he says). It is fun to debate, so lets keep it fun.

No, sorry. dags came off with an attitude because of his prior experience with a family member with breathing problems. I felt I was unfairly attacked, it was unwarranted and inexcusable. You don't come onto internet message boards and expect to be treated respectfully when you attack someone for something that is none of your business. Let this be a lesson, attack me if you want just don't expect peaches and cream in return. Thanks.
Okay guys...let's settle down please. I know ya all are mature to let it go or keep it off this board.

Hey, speaking of cars and toys.. What is the fastest you have had your cars up to? In a car I've hit 126, on a motorcycle if we can include those, was 150... Um, by the way... On that bike that speed was done on wet rainy roads, I remember shifting into 3rd and feeling the rear tire spin a bit.. I could just feel my leg scraping the ground. Fortunately the bike caught grip again, and off we went to a happy 150...

We have this Richard Petty Driving Experience thing they do down here. I dont think it costs that much, maybe a few hundred bucks, and you get to take a race car for a spin around the track. Been thinking about that, but when spending 2k on a pool cue... Well... Ya gotta save some money, ya know...
I think the fastest I've had my current car up to is maybe 75... I drive like grandma now.. It is amazing how much gas ya save, and how long tires last... I live about 20 miles from where I work, and the traffic is horrible, I4 sucks (Diva and Neil may know of it) We call I4, Florida's Largest Parking Lot... :)

When i was like 17 i got my dads caddy up to 140 something before it topped out. I am lucky to be alive to servive those days. man i was on a country road at night no less and was going 140 MPH and hit a little dip in the road and the tires sqealed a little and unbelievably i was able to keep it on the road. I can feel the impact if i were to crash. OUCH. Ive been in similar situations with other cars but havent been as stupid. although i supose that doesn't make much sense cause how dumb can I be driving that fast???? DUMB KID
I definatly have a need for speed. Although have never got on a bike so i guess i have a rush that i dont know of yet comming. but trust me i will be careful i dont think i will come even close to 150 the thought just scares me thinking about it.
