View Full Version : Best way to repair BK Shaft

StB
05-10-2004, 10:21 AM
I'm sure that there is probably a topic somewhere on this board about the best way to repair a nick in a shaft, but there is a lot of info to sort through here so I thought I would just ask again.

Here is my situation, my father was shooting with my BK cue at a retirement community in Florida. What does that have to do with anything you may ask? Well, they have a ceiling fan above the pool table. Whap, whap whap, three HUGE impressions in the shaft. Don't suppose that's covered by the Predator warranty?

Anyway, I tried lightly sanding the shaft, but I haven't been able to put a dent in it...sorry for the pun. I don't have a lathe, or a job so I can't send the shaft somewhere to be fixed. Anyone have some low cost ideas for me?

Thanks.

Sanding is bad if ya bring it down to much or alter the radial consistency. There is a method used on conventional shafts where you take a bit of water and an iron to heat the ding, and it will raise the impression up. Works wonderfully on regular shafts. However because Predators are spliced and I think glued, they likely don't recommend this procedure.

05-10-2004, 10:53 AM
Well, if you want to, you can send it to me and I will do it for $10 plus return shipping. I have a steamer and a local cue maker showed me how to remove dings. I can't guarantee I can get it out, but I have gotten out quite a few DEEP gouges. The safest way of course is send it to predator.

skor
05-10-2004, 11:11 AM
steaming the wood may clear the dings but it is also alter the inside of the wood, changing the strength of the wood.
I rather have some dings then a broken or warp shaft.

audiopro
05-10-2004, 11:26 AM
I agree it will change the properties of the shaft. But unless you are doing it a lot, the fix should not damage the shaft. The damage it would do would be less noticable than a ding. Like said, unless you are doing it a lot. In which case you need to stop throwing your cue around so carelessly. :)

wobster
05-10-2004, 11:34 AM
You could be right, but I haven't had any problems with my cues while doing it or having it done. I have done it to my current cue twice and my break cue a few more times because it gets used by about 5 people, so it takes a beating. I have done it for a few other people as well and they have had nothing but good to say. However, there is a guy on a league around here that has a really hazardous method of doing this. What he does it gets a sopping wet rag, holds in on the ding and used a propane torch to force the moisture in. I would think a steamer would do better than that.

Maybe Neil can weigh in on this.

YOU DO NOT WANT TO STEAM THE SHAFT!

With that said, use a single drop of water on the dent, it should bring it right up if the pulp is not broken. If it is persistent, use a decent (600-1000) piece of sand paper to open up the pores in the dent, then use a drop of water. Let it sit overnight and voila! You might have to sand the dent down if it raises the grain too far.

Wood doesn't like two things: Fire and Water, steaming a shaft brings both of those together.

wobster
05-10-2004, 12:04 PM
whoops. Thanks Neil. I will have to give it a try.

audiopro
05-10-2004, 12:08 PM
Yeah, I have never tried it by simply applying one drop and letting it sit overnight. I will have to go put a ding in my shaft tonight to try it too!!

Just kidding, but I will keep it mind for when it does happen. Sounds a lot safer..

Thanks Neil! Now we know why they pay you the big bucks!! :-P

skor

audiopro
05-10-2004, 12:23 PM
I just sent it out for display at the Smithsonian museum. ha ha... j/k :-P

Actually I have a couple other dinged cues I can give it a try with. The Camel Cash bought cue my dad uses for breaking will do. It has some really nasty dents, so it should provide for a great testing environment.

CJK
05-10-2004, 12:29 PM
If you have trouble with the water staying in the dent, you can also wet a tiny ball of toilet paper or Kleenex (not anything with lotion or scents), then stick it to the dent.

Then, take your father to Wal-Mart and buy him a $15 cue to use as a fan stopper. :)

Thanks everyone. I will try the water droplet, it shouldn't have a problem staying in there with as deep as it is.

And his cue privileges have been revoked.

STB...another thought....I sent mine to Seyberts and had it turned down to 12.25....in the process, it took all the dents out.....I have both a 13 and a 12.25 now....but prefer shooting with the smaller one...Forgot what it cost, but it was very little.....2 cents is better than a penny.. 8) ..mike

StB
05-11-2004, 09:02 PM
Mike,

I like 12.25mm better than the stock 12.75mm, but also had a problem with a 314 cracking on me after it went below the 12.25 limit. I figure I can try the water droplet theory and still send it in if it doesn't work.

It is 'soaking' right now.

maughanm
05-12-2004, 08:46 AM
I've known several people to use your theory with good luck....I have been so much more careful since I dented mine the first time and I have kept it off the floor and out of the hands of borrowers.....never again. Good luck and let us know how it turns out....mike

I have found there are great looking women in most states if you go to the right places. However there is an abundance of them here in FL, and Tampa being the party area in FL because of the later alcohol cutoff, it is nice...

I was born in Ohio, been here since I was 8, although I spent a year in Maryland a few years back when a bank was converting software platforms. Hated it... Never again will I leave FL unless it is for a house in the mountains in the middle of no where in the Carolinas!!

I am awake at 2 on Saturdays, just not fully functional.

It is easier to compliment you here Christy, I don't have to worry so much about who hears me.

I hear that. Had we lost our tournament match on Wednesday, we would have been playing at 10:00 am on Saturday!! I would have been a zombie!!

I understand Neil...well considering that Mike is rarely right next to me at Park, you shouldn't worry! He takes stuff like that as a compliment himself...not to say that you should be more vocal about it by any means, but that stuff doesn't get to him...

Neil Fujiwara

I try to be respectful of you guys as a couple, but damn, sometimes I can't help myself. ;)

9balldiva
05-14-2004, 09:43 AM
LOL...that's nice of you! Sometimes I wonder if I want to be in this relationship...not because I don't love him, because I do! More along the lines of because (and I am not trying to be conceited at all) allot of guys hit on me, plus I hang out with allot of guys. Mike is always making smart ass remarks, but when he says them over and over, I begin to wonder if he really thinks what he's saying!!??

Neil Fujiwara
05-14-2004, 09:46 AM
Mike is a nice guy with a good heart. I don't agree with how he treats you sometimes, but that is not my place.

And forget about the remarks he makes, they are horrible.

You work at a bar right? Compliments and guys hitting on you are typical. I have dated a few bartender/waitresses at Clicks in my time. And if you as a guy are going to date someone like that, you have to be pretty comfty yourself. There is no reason to take it in a bad way, or let it bother you at all... Just eat, drink and be merry.. :)

9balldiva
05-14-2004, 09:52 AM
It's not that it bothers him with me working there. For instance, I have LOTS of guy friends, and many times they will come up to the pool hall and shoot with me. Mike will make a comment about "oh, is that your new boyfriend"...stupid smart ass stuff like that. When he says it though he makes sure to say he's kidding, but after so MANY times of saying it...it just gets old!! Does that make sense??

audiopro
05-14-2004, 09:54 AM
You should tell him. :)

Neil Fujiwara
05-14-2004, 09:56 AM
He is immature in that sense, that is just his personality. There has to be something behind it otherwise he wouldn't say stuff like that all the time.

Not saying that you are provoking it, but that he has something deep rooted that he feels he needs to express all the time.

And forget about the remarks he makes, they are horrible.

Sometimes, I don't like the way I'm treated either, but other times...it's totally different! Part of me wants to say "see you later" but the other part says "why would you leave"...recently I have been doing my own thing on the weekends and letting him go do whatever. I have just gotten to the point where I want to hang out with MY friends...because as usual I neglect them when I first get into a relationship.

Stoney called me the other night to ask about the big $50 tournament. Well, he was also telling me about what Morty was doing now...well, naturally I told Mike about Morty...automatically, Mike says, "Pool players are calling my girlfriends phone and not mine" I don't know if it is that he not used to having a girlfriend that everyone else gets along with too????!!! :?

Wow, that's a bit of an age difference. Not the kind of behaviour though I would expect from someone who is 33 though. But being that you are so young, that could have something to do with how he decides to treat you, and how he feels about the things that go on.

Best advice I can give ya, is dont concentrate to much on it. Just enjoy yourself and do what makes ya happy at the time, while still being somewhat prudent.

Pay attention to your friends of course, they are going to be around long after Mike is gone.

If they talk to you at the pool hall, then they are going to call you on the phone, he has to accept that.

What's Morty doing these days?

Mike wouldn't get on the boards. The only computer he has access to is my laptop...and he spends so much time at the pool hall, he would dare take time to browse the boards!!

I do try to pay attention to them. I can't tell you how many friends I have lost because I started dating someone...eventually those friends just drifted away. I made new friends through whomever I was dating...then you break up with the guy, and the friends too!

I know there's truth behind his commentary, but I try to ignore it mostly. One time saying something is one thing, but once a day is another!

I have been fortunate to not lose any friends because of dating. But that is because they have been really good friends and weathered my ignorance and ended up being there for me when I came to realize the error of my ways.

It is only in the past few years that I have found a good balance between dating and balancing friendships. I dont think it is something you can be told you have to do, rather you just develop the ability over time.

Which is yet another reason why pool players get a bad rap, people assume all pool players are either like that or associate with people like that. It is an unfortunate truth.

audiopro
05-14-2004, 11:16 AM
That is somewhat true. I try to convinve myself that where I shoot is a pool hall first, and a bar second. Well that wish may apply for me, but not everyone else. When it comes down to it, there money is made in alcohol sales, not table time.

It is easy to be brought down in that environment. All the ladies I know who work there have the worst self esteem, even though many of you have seen pics and know they are beautiful. They all drink too much and that brings ya down.

You're right it is an unfortunate truth that we get associated with that. But even worse is the truth of how things really are there. A good friend of mine who is getting married this weekend actually, taught me to seperate pool and some of the people there. I am close friends with all the staff and we all hang out together all the time. But you have to keep what is talked about to yourself, and not get involved in matters not related directly to you. Otherwise you open a can of worms and drama gets started.

LOL, we got our Soap Operah name!! Good one Neil...

Fact is anywhere you go that has regulars will have drama. I used to speed skate, and believe me there was drama there. In time we learn to steer clear of the dangers that come along with being friends with EVERYONE... There is a management process to it, and the most important part is being able to keep your mouth closed about some things even though you want to share, if only to make conversation.

It's not that the people are bad. We all have issues, and when they get mixed up with 30 other peoples issues, and then scattered around, it goes bad. Every single person I know at Clicks is an authentic and great person. They have all helped me when I needed it, and vice versa. It's just sometimes people dont realize the things they say and do publicly can effect others. Well they may realize it, but not know the extent.

I played golf for about 15 years or so...and the one thing I liked about it was that you never met jerks on the golf course....Now, I'm 100% back in pool....but I must say....that I hardly ever go to a pool hall that there is not some jerk or asshole in there...I think it is better than it used to be back when I was younger...but still a problem....Tournaments I go to where there are 20 - 25 players...there is at least 3 assholes in the crowd.
Pool still keeps that bad rep, because of these few who show their arses. I had to sneak into pool rooms when I was a teenager because it was so rough.....I will say...it is better now than it was then........mike

We don't really have any hardcore assholes. We have one newbie to our PH who is a bit cocky, and I dont like that at all. But I dont think he will last long because that type of person just doesn't go well with our atmosphere.

The great thing about Clicks is the awesome staff. They do not tolerate a lot of crap that is typical in other pool halls. And they will kick you out and ask you not come back again. It really is a pretty clean place.

Yeah Neil I know how that goes. I used to be a bouncer at a skating rink... lol... How bad is that!!!! We had 6 of us whose only job was to toss out the trouble makers.

We had some pretty bad gang activity too. Was not in the bad part of town, but right outside. They were little kiddie gangs, but they were violent. Guns and knives we found almost nightly. On some occasions the "Duke Boys" Orange County's gang unit, would make visits and arrest droves of people.

The trouble was pretty transparent however to most people, as we did a pretty efficient job at getting thigs taken care of.

Neil there used to be a roller skating rink where 8 seconds was (the one that just closed)...I lived in the neighborhood right next to that, and there were gangs everywhere...I hung out with all of them, and they weren't that bad, but there were other who were!! You know.
