I personally had a new an unusual situation come up while playing 8-Ball late this afternoon and we could not find a rule covering it.

I was down to simply making the eight ball which was only about 9 inches from an end pocket. My opponet had several balls left on the table and one was hung in the pocket supposedly blocking the end pocket above.

So, I called the eight ball in the pocket and simply made the eight ball by following his ball in. A "difference of opinion" arose about this but we could find nothing in the rules that said it wasn't a legal shot. FWIW......I called the shot as well as the pocket.

Does anyone know of any rule covering this?

IMHO if there isn't something to the contrary then it was a legal shot.

I checked today with a local tournament director AND he verified that the only requirement regarding the referenced shot was to have called the pocket for the eight-ball.....it was not necessary to call the shot......in my case......I had done both which is fine.

Primetime,
You win in most sets of rules. That's something that needs to be specified. I only know one league where the 8-ball needs to go in "clean". If you don't know ahead of time, you probably aren't playing those rules.

It should be okay as long as the called ball goes into the called pocket. Some people play CALL POCKET others play CALL SHOT.
