Estate ivory is simply ivory that was in the country before the ban on importing ivory was put into place in the eighties.

So how does ivory get imported now? Or does it? Translated, are we dealing with a limited supply in the US for cue making?

Ivory importing = a no no, where we get our ivory are a)ivory that was previously in the country before they said no more importing, and b) apprantly if an elephant dies in the zoo we can harvest its tusk  , now there might be some way to import ivory but i think for the most part you cant. Anyone correct me if im wrong.

Cheers,
Zach

I'd bet there is a fairly large amount of illegally imported ivory floating around. Just like anything else, people are willing to risk the trouble for the dollars it could bring in...

I have read an article about ivory being imported from African elephants that have died of natural causes, but there is a limit on the importation. Once I re-find the article, I will post the link.

Nope, I was wrong.

Aparently, you can only buy ivory that was pre-ban. I had read an article saying that "they" were allowing limited poaching of elephants to reduce herd size. Apparently, the only country that was allowed to legally import ivory was Japan. I think that may still be in effect, but the African countries are trying to band together and ban the poaching of elephants. This means no more ivory for awhile. From what I have read, however, there is a very large supply of ivory in the U.S., so I don't think there is any concern of depleting this supply.
