I figure the ferrule is close enough to the tip to belong in here.....

Anyway, anybody out there have any experience doing this? I have just started to learn today. My buddy bought a machine from a pool hall that recently closed out after the owner died. I think this machine is as old or older than I am, but it works great. I am considering buying this thing now...

Anyway, anybody have any experience, advice?

I am good friends with a custom cue maker, and I have watched him do it many times. His process:
Cut off existing ferrule with cutting tool until you are down to the wood.
Measure diameter of pin
Make hole in ferrule a little over that
Use pro-bond glue on inside of ferrule, slide onto pin, wipe off excess.
Allow to dry 5 minutes or so.

Another question.

Anybody know a good supplier of ferrules? Preferrably in Canada as the Canadian gov't and shipping comanies take a bite out of me any time I support the U.S. market.

The only supplier I know of off hand is atlas billiard supply, out of chicago. They have a $50 minimum order policy.
I am sure there are many more out there, but my cue maker highly recommends atlas.

Atlas is also who Chris Nitti uses. When I asked him if his ivory was bleached or not he told me no, never. And that he gets his stuff from a very reputable place called Atlas.

Yeah, I tried to order from Atlas but they were out of one of the ferrules I wanted. Plus, I am not too wild about their $10.00 small order fee as I am ordering a small order because I am just starting to do ferrules and don't want huge start-up. I think I just have to bite the bullet and order a big order....

I seem to be the guy in town the other players come to when they need something. I have also found a supplier of exotic woods so I might try my hand at making custom joint protectors......

I believe atlas sells wood as well. That is who my cue maker goes through. If you order 1 chunk of coco bola or applejack plus the ferrules, there is the 50.

Also, a little tip I got from my friend, as I am going to start changing tips and ferrules, use Aegis. It is by far the best. And the Ivorine-3 sucks. You cannot get it clean, as there is discoloration to it.

I thought I'd put my 2 cents in here. The majority of good cues have a threaded ferrule so if you're replacing ferrules you would be doing a disservice to the customer if you replace a threaded ferrule with a slip on one. Ferrules are threaded with a 5/16-14 compressions die. The compression die can be found at Atlas or directly through one of the manufacturers like Unique Products. Ivorine is a difficult material to keep clean but there are ways around that as well, such as sealing the the ferrule with super glue. It is also one of the only materials that I know of that will not crack if installed uncapped.

I need to clarify one thing in the last post. Ferrules are tapped with a 5/16-14 tap and a compression die is used to thread the tennon.

5/16-18! Fingers aren't working today!

I have limited experience with cues, as I have only been seriously into pool for about 2 years, but I have only seen 1 threaded ferrule (none on cues that have been worked on at my cue-makers). It was a black dot, and a few days later the guy was shooting with it (with no modification at all other than the tip) and the ferrule came unscrewed. It was easily fixed with super glue gel and screwing it back on.

Maybe someone can clarify for me, does predator use screw on ferrule or straight through capped?

Straight-through capped, to my knowledge. Same with our custom cuemakers locally. I had a first-hand exposure to it when my buddy's ferrule came off his custom cue.
