I have tried numerous tips for a break cue. I have been using a phenolic tip for the past few months and it is amazing in comparison with others. The only problem I had with the phenolic tips were keeping them attached to the ferrule. So I purchased a J&J jump break cue with one installed already.

phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic! phenolic!
If you are playing a game with a slop break (eight ball, nine ball, etc)then you want to transfer as much energy to the cue ball as possible. Nothing accomplishes this better than a phenolic tip. The only reason not to use a phenolic tip would be if you like to put a lot of spin on the cue ball.
I never had a particularly strong break but since putting a phenolic tip on my break cue I have fewer breaks where I fail to pocket a ball and more breaks where I pocket multiple balls and get a better spread on the balls. Because of this I am running out on lot more racks. The down side to this of course is when I don't pocket a ball I am getting run out on more.
I would recomend to any one that they try a phenolic tip on their break cue. If you don't like it you can always go back and you are only out a few bucks.

Ok, if I wanted to buy a phenolic tip at a good price where would I look? Ebay?
We have them for $15.00 a tip and $25.00 installed

Is that the Bunjee Jump tip, Rick?
Also, say for example I wanted to use some spin on the cue ball when breaking and opted for a tip other than the phenolic. What tip then would be a good choice for control and durability in leather tips? I have heard the Talisman WB tips do well in this regard. Thanks.
No it is not... we have not posted the phenolic tip yet. These tips are the ones our cue maker makes for us.

Ok, cool. So if I wanted one I could just call and order it then or will it be added to the site soon? Thanks.
The tips should be available on the web by this afternoon.
Thank you

I have another question, Deb. When we go to purchase a cue on the site the phenolic tip option is not available. Is that something that will be added as well? Thanks! :)
Yes I will be adding that as well as making some adjustment on other cue tips. It won't be done tonight, but it should be done by Thrusday.

Ok, that would be super! Thanks Deb! 8)
The Predator break tip on my BK works great for me :)
Just wanted to add that it work great even if you put spin on it (like in 8 ball break)

Thanks for the input, skor. How would you compare the hardness of the Predator BK tip? Is it as hard as a tip like a Moori H or Talisman H or XH? Thanks.

I just wanted to add this about the phenolic tips and their ability to hold chalk. Anyone that has used one of these tips knows how next to impossible it is to get this tip to hold chalk. I have come up with a solution to this :)
I used my tip pik and LIGHTLY created holes in the tip. Wouldn't you know that tip holds chalk now. It is especially useful for whenever I have to use my jump cue.
Good luck to all that try these great tips.

ive been using jospeh piccone phenolic tip and it holds chalk very well. yeah the tip pik works well on it. my break improve alot after switiching frm talisman pro xh to a phenolic tip altho i must say the talisman pro hx is also one hell of a break tip but the phenolic improved my game more. shoots like a rifle! :)
Cue of Fury,
I never tried any of these hard tips, so I can't realy say.
The Predator break tip is very hard, almost as hard as the tip on my jump cue.
with some "picking" it holds the chalk very well and I don't get any miscues when I put side spin. I also use the BK cue for masse shots, I find it to easier to do with the BK cue (I get a lot more action)

All I use now for Open Break Games is a phenolic tip that I made myself. I had access to some phenolic so I built one shaped it and installed it all myself. It hasnt came off yet and it has been on for about 2 months now. The phenolic tip can and will provide some degree of spin as long as you are chalked up and keep it to about a tip width off-center.
For games requiring a more subtle break I just use my predator cue with my instroke tip since I am trying to keep the cue ball under control.
Ziklag,
On all types of game you want to control the cue ball, that is the key to a good break.
