What pool game do you enjoy the most. I enjoy 14.1 but don't get to play it very much because everybody in my area plays 9-ball exclusively :(

I also like 14.1 but I enjoy playing one pocket much better. I guess it is because I like to play chess but I am not very good at it. This is just as good because it is like playing chess with something I am good at. Shoothing pool balls. :)

I might be wrong, but I believe "golf" is played on a snooker table.
I also would vote for 14.1, but nobody plays it anymore.

My bad  I meant to say snooker, but somehow golf came out. Since the poll can't be modified, please consider golf to mean snooker.

I still play 14.1, but only when the guys I play with want to get serious or want to practice the fundamentals. I think 14.1 is a very important game, and it builds a solid shooting foundation. My vote is 14.1.
I see 8-ball has the most votes right now. 8-ball was the first pool game my father taught me, and I still enjoy playing it now and then. It isn't as severe a test of skill as is 9-ball or 14.1, but two good players can make a heck of a game out of it.
Here in Tokyo, you would think that 9-ball is the only pool game there is. I've taught a few casual players 8-ball, and they play it instead of 9-ball now.

I have to disagree with you here. You are saying that 9-ball is a more severe test of skill than 8-ball? I would like to here your explaination on this one.
Think about it really. It is diffentlly not a more severe test of skill when in any game of 9-ball you can make the 9-ball at anytime and in any mannor of the game as long as it was a legal hit and win the game. There is a ton of more lucky ways to win in 9-ball than there is in 8-ball. The game of 8-ball takes more skill.

I have to agree with Lou. 9 Ball is more difficult. 9-ball you have to play the balls in order from 1-9 (not end the game early with a piss shot or combo). there for you have to have shape and cue control. 8 ball doesnt really require shape and cue control. I shot 8ball 11 yrs before i found 9ball. and 9ball is harder, but i think is more fun. Besides in eightball, almost anywere you land on the table, you gonna have a shot: 9ball doesnt work like that.

I still have to disagree here. Yes in 9-ball you do have to go in rotation but there are only 9 balls on the table. In 8-ball you still have to play for position for you next shot. Yes in 8-ball for the first couple of balls you will almost always have a shot at you disignated ball (stripes or solids) but after making about 2 or 3 or your balls being able to get position is going to be harder because you now have 12 or 13 to manuavor around instead of just 5 or 7 balls you have to deal with in 9-ball. Playing for position with that many balls on the table is much more difficult than playing for position with only 6 or 7 balls on the table. I am not meaning to start anykind of rift here this is just my opnion.

I find the 8-ball / 9-ball debate interesting as well. It also depends on what size table you are playing on. 8-ball (to me) gets a little easier when you go from a 7 foot table to an 8 foot table (less clustering). I have an 8 foot table and I can tell you I run about 3 times more often playing 8-ball than 9-ball. My vote is that 9-ball is more difficult. But that's only my opinion.

I prefer billiards (mostly because I have a billiard table). Mostly 1 and 3 cushion. I recently came up with a good training game for myself and the kids. I call it Killer. You play it like this:
Lag for break, winner breaks.
you can get a point for any 0, 1 or 2 rail billiard, however, if you simply hit a 0 rail billiard, then the next point must include a rail. If you hit a 3-rail, then you get 3 points. If you hit two 0-rails points in a row, then the 2nd point does not count and you lose your turn. This teaches the kids the benefit of trying harder shots, while still keeping the game fun and quick.

Billiards is too tough for most players around here and all pool halls have removed their billiards tables. Have you found any sites where they have information on billiards rules and games.

Lou, first let me tell you!!!!!! Teacher------Thats great ! A very honarable profession ! I'm a 53 yrs. old guy , grew up in Chicago playing Straight Pool, mostly for a fair amount of money. It's a great game but, the world has changed !.......9-Ball is probably the game right now....fast, etc. da......da.......da ! I hope Straight pool makes a comeback.....probably won't be for another 50 yrs. though! Whatever game you play, you can get into it, break it down to the basics, enjoy the strategy....then, practice, practice, practice.........then kick their butt! Have a good one.......Tommyd !! :wink

It's a shame that the rooms in your area have gotten rid of their billiards tables. Billiards seems to be more popular here in Japan than it is in the US, and on several occasions I've ended my pool practice sessions early so I could watch a good billiards game. I've thought about getting into it, but I still have too much work to do on my pool game.
The only Web site for billiards I've seen is at http://eztravel.com/billiards.

I agree. Although I'd rather be living in straight pool days, all the games require skill, and I'm far from being a master of any of them. When I get back to the US, I'll start playing one pocket with the older guys. I'm sure that will keep me busy.
Sorry, I accidentally posted twice.

I do not believe that 8 ball or nine ball requires any more or less skill in either game. the strategy is different, the more you play either game the more you learn different ways of winnig or losing. You still have to make the shots and play the right shape or you will not win in either game.
by the way Golf is played on a snooker table with or without skittles and blocking balls it can get to be very expensive if you come in last place have also seen golf played on smaller tables but it is a different game again. it is played similar to three ball but you are making different number of balls for different holes two balls for a par three, three balls for a par four and four balls for a par five the balls are racked in diferent areas of the triangle also.

I play 9 ball mainly, but i LOVE straight pool and would like to be alot better at it.
It is a well tricky game, but harder still is findin someone to playit with.
On the 9ball vs 8ball thing i would have to agree that 9ball is more difficult, the rotation thing, hence the quality of the positioning required.
At risk of insultin some people 9ball is an easier game to get by in, but it is a harder game to play at a top level. A muppet can feel he is achieving something by potting a quick 9 with a jammy shot, and there is no "feel good" equivalent in 8ball.
Both games are very difficult when played at a decent level tho, and other posters have been right too in saying that the main difference between the 2 is the strategy, one thing that i know to be true tho is that despite the facti dont really play it, i can beat a good 8ball player easier than i can beat a good 9ball player

??? what are you talking about i think your stereotyping the people in your area. there is always good players and bad. what is with the statement ALL pool halls have removed their tables what is with that?
Straight pool is my all-time favorite game although with most of my buddies I usually play 8-ball. One of my buddies likes playing straights, too, but that seems to be a better game when there are only two of us playing since the games last much longer than a game of 8-ball does. With 8-ball, if one person is sitting out a game, he doesn't have to sit too long before he gets a chance to play. My best run in straight pool is only 14 balls on a 9ft table....but I got cocky and missed an easy shot that would've let me run a few more.
I never cared much for 9-ball. I play it from time to time but don't really like it. I think it would be a much better game, even for the pros if they had to call their shots. The luck factor in 9-ball is what I like the least about it. For the average player, luck might be a good thing, but for professionals, the game is too easy. I do enjoy watching it on TV but the one thing that is constantly in the back of my mind is that these pro players are much better than they get a chance to show in 9-ball.
Someday soon I want to try my hand at playing one-pocket. From what I have read, that is one of the hardest games of pool to master.
