I've played with a few McDermott cues, and like the hit and feel I get from them. All the models I've played with have had the wood-to-wood joint and an adjustable weight-bolt. Does the Genesis Series have this:

http://www.seyberts.com/mcdermott/GenesisSeries/index.htm

It's at a good price point (only $136), and free options include leather-grip & custom stain colors and a wide range of shaft diameters! Are these McDermott's any worse in quality than the one's I used or is the low price point a reflection of the lack or ornimentation & inlays.

For an beginner/intermediate level-player (APA handicap 3, 1.5 years experience), would you suggest that this is of comparable quality to a similar priced viking?

Fuzzy,

Three main differences between a $175 McDermott and a $2500 McDermott.

1. Butt construction: Genesis series uses a 1 piece butt construction.
See Butt "C" at this link. That is a Genesis butt
http://www.mcdermottcue.com/PAGES/Misc/IMAGES/3butts.JPG

Reason for 3 piece butt on higher end cues is for production reasons (building patterns with a sleeve and throat is best done when there are multiple pieces), to give added resistance against warpage, and to balance out the weight of the cue better.

Need not worry about warpage on Genesis series though as we have been using that one piece butt construction for many years, and have experienced very few problems.

Not to mention our new warranty has lifetime warranty against warpage

2. Inlays & Ringwork

3. Quick Release joint. (Which you could custom order on a Genesis series cue if you preferred)

Long story short - If your in the market for a new cue, and want something the plays really well, no major reason to go any higher then Genesis unless you are after a different look. If you want the benefits of the 3 piece butt, check out the Metal-X Pros. $250...could get it cheaper too if you went with a stain instead of a paint though.

Hope that helps.

Steve,
Thanks so much for your detailed response. I'm excited about getting a customized cue for such a good price. Last night I had a chance to play a few games with some of my APA teammate's McDermott, and now I am sold on the solid hit and feedback your cues offer.
I didn't see the "quick-release" option listed on the Genesis ordering page. How much is this option?
FYI - Seyberts should update the text for the "McDermott Promise" - http://www.seyberts.com/mcdermott/popups/promise.htm - Seyberts has the old text where it says that warpage isn't covered.

Hello All!

I have been told if an option is not on the order page the call Seyberts they will work with you. They can give you the price of the options. Now if you order online just add comments in when ordering the cue. They will charge you what you agreed when you called Seyberts.
Here is a link of Mcdermott options and prices from Mcdermott.
http://www.mcdermottcue.com/PAGES/Misc/Stain%20and%20Wrap.htm

Now Seyberts may have different prices for these. So call for the latest pricing.
