Pool cloth FACTS Not FICTION

The Difference between Wool & Worsted Cloth
In general there are two different kinds of pool cloth.  Both types are made from wool and usually contain a percentage of nylon.  The less expensive cloths also contain polyester. It is rare that worsted cloths are removed from the tables because they have worn through to the slate, they are normally changed because of dirt and wear in the racking areas. Woolen cloths are less durable than worsteds, but do not have the ball speed.

Wool:   Woven with yarn that is made from long and short fibers twisted together to make a bulky yarn with a fuzzy surface.

  • Wool is less expensive
  • Shows marks & chalk less as the looser weave and construction allows chalk to go through the cloth.
  • The cloth tends to pill causing balls to run slower.
  • Less durable and sheds fibers.

Worsted:  Woven with yarn that is combed to remove the short fibers, making the cloth smoother.
  • More expensive.
  • Balls run faster with a consistent speed.
  • More durable.
  • Will not compress to form gullies on the table.

  1. Inspected and cut in England in 8 and 9ft sets, individually rolled on cardboard tubes, with the cushions also cut to size.

Is Cloth Weight Important?
The density of the cloth is the important factor when choosing billiard cloth.  The closer the ball is to the slate the faster the ball will run.   As a principle, the finer the yarn the more picks (thread count) per inch, the higher the density and the longer the cloth will last.  Humidity and the tightness of fitting are two factors which also have an impact on speed.  Thick heavy cloth from coarse wool with a loose construction will reduce speed of play.  When purchasing a pool cloth consider the construction of the cloth over the weight to ensure you are buying a quality product.

Is cloth composition important?
As a general rule the higher the nylon content the greater the physical strength of the cloth, and is an aid to durability of the cloth to end use, not the playability. Nylon content is usually limited to a 30% maximum due to manufacturing restraints. The difference between a like for like 30% nylon and a 10% nylon content cloth in reality is neither here nor there, as usually the cloth is taken off well before it goes to end use, due to stains and dirt.

When does a cloth need changing?
This is all down to the site owner, and everyone will have a different opinion, as to when a cloth is worn out! As the cloth manufacturer we have had to make a balanced decision as to the construction composition and weave to give maximum durability and to maintain the ball speed, and that takes 225 years of technical experience to do that!

What are the Factors That Increase the Cost of Cloth?

Composition & Types of Wool: The coarser the wool the cheaper to buy.   Merino wool is expensive and nylon is more expensive than polyester. ‘Bulls wool’ is the cheapest, feel the difference between the Hainsworth and the competition!
The Finer the Yarn:  The finer the fibres that are used and the more 'picks' (thread count) that can be packed into a yard of cloth, the higher the cost.
Chemicals: The quality of the chemicals used to dye the cloth and coat the fibres for stain and waterproofing. If the quality is good, the protective coating is enhanced and the cloth color is less likely to fade under the lights.
Cloth Finish: The finish on the cloth has to be smooth and flat, with no loose fibres. The more extensive the finishing process, the higher the cost.
Testing: The cloth is checked at every stage of the manufacturing process, from purchasing the wool to simulating pool play, checking durability, stretch and quality of fibres. The more tests, the higher the cost, but the more consistent the cloth will become.
Machinery: State-of-the-art, modern machinery enables Hainsworth to put their unique finishes on the cloth, using techniques which have been perfected over 225 years in technical textiles.

CLOTH PERFORMANCE & MAINTENANCE

FIBRILLATION
In any pure wool cloth individual fibres become damaged in areas of heavy use.  On the cloth this appears as ‘white’ marks and lines (ball tracks), principally on cushion edges, pocket openings and racking areas.
This effect is known as ‘fibrillation’, caused by the breakdown of the outer protective scales of the wool, exposing the inner fibre structure (fibrils).
Fibrillation is in fact an optical illusion, caused by the different reflection of light on the exposed ‘fibrils’.  This can be shown by slightly dampening the area which will temporarily make the fibres re-form and return to the color of the surrounding cloth.
It should be remembered that fibrillation...

  • Is not a fault but part of the normal process of wear of any wool cloth and should not be confused with moth damage, cue stabs or damage resulting from poor table discipline.
  • Has no significant effect on playing performance.

Fibrillation is accelerated by poor maintenance and table discipline, in particular...

  • Lack of regular brushing to remove chalk dust.
  • The use of damaged or greasy balls.
  • Excessively powerful shots which cause the balls to bounce.
  • The careless dropping of balls onto the cloth, particularly noticeable where the balls are racked up.
  • Not replacing worn or missing rack spot markings.
